I just watched Kill la Kill and while it's kinda slaps you in the face with the fanservice and fetishy themes, it was actually pretty good with a combination of humor and plot with decent character development. Any fans of FLCL will probably like it. As I recall it was 24 episodes that are all about 25 min in length so you dont get of that "short episode" crap and it's not so super long and drawn out that you'll be watching it for weeks.

it's also a bit like Tengen Toppa Gurren Laggan.

btw, that one's also good because Manly Tears and Galaxy Shurikens.

Will suggest a couple of nice & short series:

Code Geass (strange how nobody mentioned it), an interesting twist on mech animes.

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann: a little known jewel. Watch it or watch it.

Also will concur with the poster above suggesting Legend Of The Galactic Heroes, but that's one serious piece with 110 episodes. Just the best space opera ever filmed, though.

And last, a cult series, ("cult" as in love it or hate it)

Gantz

Personally, I think it makes GOT's Red Wedding look like a joyful picnic, so be warned. Ugh

Q: Should we be worried? A: Nope. (...) Worry a lot if Fozzie, Masterplan, Rise, Veritas, Bettik, Ytterbium, Scarpia, Arrow, or even Greyscale leaves. Worry a little if Punkturis, karkur, SoniClover, Affinity, Goliath, or Xhagen leaves.

    Gintama
    Knights of Sidonia(sp)
    Samurai Shamploo
    Samurai Seven

Gintama in particular will take a while to get through, as it's a Shonen Jump series and runs a goodly 265 episodes.

    Code Geass
-- Mind control. Mecha. Lelouch. What more do you need?

    Cowboy Bebop

    Darker than Black
-- Dem Collarbones. Also superpowers in an interesting setting.

    Ergo Proxy
    -- Futuretech Cyberpunk Dystopia.

    Fate/Zero
-- Okay, this one is a bit heavy. It's related to the Fate/ Franchise of visual novels, light novels and etc. But its ridiculously good. You *should* watch Fate/Stay Night beforehand, but it's a generally weaker adaptation of the relevant visual novel versus this adaptation of the prequel light novel. Lost yet? good!.

Ghost in the Shell + 2nd Gig
-- Futuretech Cyberware. Insanely good soundtrack.

    The Kara no Kyoukai movies
-- Done by the same guys as the Fate/Zero anime, and set in the same universe. It's complicated and a bit of a clusterfuck.

    Kill la Kill
-- A fairly recent Anime by the TTGL guys. Warning, this show will sexualize *anything*.

    Kurokami
-- Not in any particular way special, but i didn't regret watching.

    Last Exile
    -- Steampunk Airships.

    Madlax
-- A very, very confusing show at times.

    Mahou Shojo Madoka Magicka
-- Okay, force yourself through the first two episodes or so. I promise it'll pay off.

    Noein
-- Wibbely Wobbly Timey wimey. It's been a while and thats all I remember.

    PaniPoni Dash!
    -- Sugarrushohgod

    RIN Daughters of Mnemosyne
-- Fairly adult-themed. Was worth the watch though.

Rozen Maiden + Traumend + Zurückspulen
    -- Dolljoints.

    Samurai Champloo
-- Crazy dudes, crazy dudes EVERYWHERE.

    Scrapped Princess
-- Fantasy setting, again, remember little but didn't regret watching.

    Shikabane Hime
-- More than a little weird. Good soundtrack. Dairly morbid.

    Shiki
    -- The slow vampire invasion.

    Sword Art Online
-- Feelsfest2000. The only anime I've cried more after watching was Clannad Afterstory. There's a reason I didn't reccomend Clannad. Brb, getting a tissue.

    Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
    -- Manly Combining.

    Tenjou Tenghe
    -- Martial arts school society.

    The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
-- Hello sir have you accepted our lord and Saviour Haruhi into your life?

    Trigun
-- Comedic futuretech western? Best way I can sum it up.

    Trinity Blood
-- More vampires. And Able. Pretty hilarious with some serious streaks.

    Witch Hunter Robin
-- Another thats been too long since I watched to remember

    Resident Haruhiist since December 2008.

I see Planetes has already been mentioned, but I will echo the recommendation. The manga is also worth the read.

    王立宇宙軍 オネアミスの翼

    Quote:
Surrounded by a cynical public and corrupt, manipulative State leaders, the Royal Space Force (RSF) is largely viewed as a joke as well as a waste of precious money and resources. After a chance meeting with a young, empathetic woman reencourages cadet Shiro Lhadatt to become the first man in space, the RSF cadets and a team of aging scientists rush to complete their epic launch before the military uses their space program as bait to start an all-out war.

    RD 潜脳調査室

    Quote:
2061 AD. Fifty years have passed since mankind developed the Network society. It was anticipated that this new infrastructure would realize a utopia where people connected with each other at the level of consciousness. However, new social problems such as personal data leaks and proliferation of manipulated information began to surface. Nevertheless, people still relied on the Network to exchange information, and proved unable to opt to abandon it.

In due course, a new Network realm with more effective security measures was developed. This was called Meta Real Network, usually abbreviated as "the Metal."

The Metal accommodated personal memory data within protected virtual stand-alone organic cyber enclaves called bubble shells and eventually pervaded the everyday lives of people.

However, people gradually learned to release and explode their instincts within the secure environment of the Metal. The unleashed instincts pushed each individual's consciousness to drown in the sea of information and to be exposed to the pressures of desire. Meanwhile, norms and regulations continued to bind their real world lives. Thus, strange friction between the two worlds began to manifest themselves as aberrations beyond the bounds of the imaginable.

Experts who challenged the deep sea of the Metal to investigate and decipher such aberrations were called cyber divers.

This is a story of a cyber diver, Masamichi Haru, who investigates the incidents that lie between Reality and the Metal.

Not a big fan of its sequel series AO but it was alright.

Just gonna mention the newer series as everyone else have covered most the obvious older must-watch.

Kill la Kill most definitely. Whilst there is a lot of "fanservice" it is by far more modest and even a central part of the plot than compared to a purely "ecchi" series. Whilst the plot itself is somewhat silly it's all about the artstyle, pace and the way the plot is told which for me is 11/10. But hey, it's from the creators of TTGL.

No Game no Life - which is currently ongoing is really awesome too. It's a tiny bit of Sword Art Online/Log Horizon mixed with a healthy dose of Mondaijitachi. And I quite like the art style as well.

Mekakucity Actors - in a similar vein and style to the Monogatari series.

Nisekoi - a typical rom-com with good humor and once again with a really awesome art style.

Tonari no Seki-kun - for the sheer laughs. The manga brought me to tears laughing many times.

Space Dandy - from the makers of Cowboy Bebop. Lots of comedy in this one but it may not be up everyone's alley though.

Accel World (takes place some 20 odd years after Sword Art Online), some nice action, MC a little hard to take at times tho.

    Ongoing ones of note...

Black Bullet - monsters and cyborgs and little girls kicking ass, oh my.

Hitsugi No Chaika - Still not sure whether or not the MC's are the good guys or the bad guys.

M3 Sono Kuroki Hagane - very dark, hard to stop watching tho.

Thought of a couple more I haven't yet seen pop up.

    イ・リ・ア ZEIЯAM THE ANIMATION

    Quote:
The story begins with Iria as an apprentice to her older brother, Gren, a veteran bounty hunter, and his partner Bob, who work for Ghomvak Security along with a somewhat loutish hunter named Fujikuro. During a rescue mission to a hi-jacked spaceship called the "Karma", they discover that the hi-jacker is actually a seemingly indestructible alien called Zeiram that broke out of the cargo hold during transit and began to massacre the crew.

    妄想代理人

    Quote:
Tsukiko Sagi, a shy character designer who created the immensely popular pink dog Maromi, finds herself under pressure to repeat her success. As she walks home from the office one night, she is attacked by an elementary schoolboy on inline skates. Two police detectives, Keiichi Ikari and Mitsuhiro Maniwa, are assigned to the case. They suspect that Tsukiko is lying about the attack, until they receive word of a second victim. Soon the attacker, dubbed Lil' Slugger, is blamed for a series of street assaults in Tokyo. None of the victims can recall the boy's face and only three distinct details are left in their memories: golden inline skates, a baseball cap, and the weapon: a bent golden baseball bat. Ikari and Maniwa set out to track down the perpetrator and put an end to his crimes.

    カイバ

    Quote:
In Kaiba, memories can be stored as computerized information, so that when people's bodies die, their minds can live on. This digitization of mental information allows both the transference of one's mind to someone else's body, and the theft and alteration of other people's memories. Society has fallen apart as authority has become lost and stagnant. In the skies are roiling clouds and electrical storms, impossible to pass without losing one's memories; above them lies the elusive realm of the rich and powerful, who barter others' bodies and memories for their own enjoyment and longevity. Below lies a troubled and dangerous world where good bodies are hard to come by and real money is scarce.

The series begin as a boy named Kaiba awakens in a ruined room. He has no memories, but he does have a pendant with a picture of an unknown woman inside. After suddenly being attacked, Kaiba escapes into space, and during his travels meets all sorts of people and regains his memories. Throughout it, he continues to be troubled by the world's problems, as well as his own existence. When his brutal past comes to light, he must face all who wish to see him dead. Meanwhile, the woman from the pendant struggles with her cultic convictions and her own memories, which may be intertwined with Kaiba's origins.

    モノノ怪

    Quote:
The story follows a wandering, nameless character known only as the "Medicine Seller". The series is made up of individual chapters in which the medicine seller encounters and combats mononoke. The "mononoke" are a type of ayakashi, unnatural spirits that linger in the human world.

The Medicine Seller always proceeds in the same manner, using his knowledge of the supernatural to fend off the mononoke until he can learn the spirit's shape (Katachi), truth (Makoto) and reasoning (Kotowari). Only then can he unsheathe his sword and exorcise the demon.

I haven't seen it here but I wanna give it a mention:

    Elfen Lied

I am NOT recommending this one. It is intensely brutal, very dramatic, and incredibly tragic. It is a story of children who were enhanced to have extreme telekinetic powers, who became too much to handle in development and began to hurt people without meaning to, or really grasping what they were doing. They grow up in isolation and without parents.

Then the most powerful one escapes...

Like I said, I do not recommend you watch it. If you choose to watch it, you do so at your own discretion. That being said, I thought it was really well done. I am happy that I watched it.

FT Diomedes: "Reaver, sometimes I wonder what you are thinking when you sit down to post."

I really enjoyed that one, but find it hard to describe it without spoilers.
