New player and exploration (is it something I can do?)

So I started playing EVE 4 days ago, and I thought exploration sounded cool.

But so far I've been running around with a probe launcher on my ship and scanning every system I go into (while I bounce around doing random lvl 1 missions) and nothing ever comes up!

Is this normal and should I just be more persistent? Do I have to have really good skills to see anything? Do you have to be in low-sec/null to get sites a decent amount of the time? And is lowsec something I could do as a 4 day old player with 4 mill ISK net worth who can't really afford to lose a ship?

Thanks for any help :)

simply make sure to use the longest range setting on the probes when doing the initial scan, and make sure to compensate for systems that are really large.

If you still don't get anything then there really isn't anything to find and no amount of skills help you find something that isn't there. Try looking in unpopulated systems and lower sec systems. You can use the in-game map to check this sorta thing.

Check out the exploration section of my guide.

As a new player, there are 2 paths of exploration which you can easily access.

First part is ninja salvaging, which involves scanning down mission running ships in popular level 4 mission hubs with expanded probe launcher and salvaging the wrecks they leave behind.

The alternative is exploring, high sec and low sec radar and mag sites. They are quite profitable and in most cases one site can pay for your ship.

High sec radar sites can net up to 25MIL if you are lucky.

Low -sec will definitely have bigger and better sites, but the issue of how to get look back into high-sec and NPC spawns in low-sec exploration sites can be a major issue.

Stick with high sec until you are familiar with scanning, and then move into low sec zones that are not populated.

Even with very low skills, as long as your probes cover an exploration site, you should be able to see it, even if you can't probe it down all the way to 100%. Highsec has plenty of sites, it's just that the good ones don't stay around in one place for long before someone runs them.

In the scanner window, there's a drop down box for filters, to the left of it is the settings icon, make sure all the cosmic anomalies and signatures are selected.

Use http://evemaps.dotlan.net/ to find quiet(er) systems.

Don't go to lowsec with a ship you can't afford to lose, in fact, you shouldn't fly any ship you can't afford to lose in the first place because s*** happens.

Personally I find highsec Radar sites to drop around 10m on average, they take almost no effort to run but it can take a while to find them.

Highsec combat sites can also only take 5 to 10 minutes to run (once you find them of course) and can net you anything from nothing to 500m+ ISK (if you're REALLY lucky).

I suggest looking through the exploration threads under the Missions & Complexes section and/or joining "Exploration" channel in game.

My short highsec probing career tought me that unless you are far away from civilization chances are that someone will have beat you to the sites. Lowsec and 0.0 are much better.

There are some links in my bio about going to lowsec and making isk. Check them out - they might help

Make sure you watch a couple probing videos (youtube has plenty) and get the hang of some probing!
