Legit scam, or against the rules.

A player is offering "A nightmare with your Character Portrait" in a contest where you have to send him isk to enter. He even has a webpage setup at www.evesomething.com to make it look even more legit.

Here's a screenshot I snapped: http://i.imgur.com/GN3Ky.jpg

(Name and webpage censored just in case this is legit, I want him to get as many people as possible.) Is this an extremely clever scam or is this against the rules?

P.S. Not looking to gripe or complain; I haven't sent him any money. Besides, who would want a picture of a hairy Mister Clean on the side of their Nightmare? *shudder*

Was it posted over and over again in Jita local chat, like how an auto-clicker macro program (bot) does?

Send me isk, bla de bla....

Send me isk, bla de bla....

Send me isk, bla de bla....

I have reported at least 30 bots and isk spammers, and I'm hungry for more.

I have never used a bot in Eve-Online, but I know very well they are impossible to beat and almost impossible to detect for the programmers.

Bot users fear me.

Getting you on your feet.

So you've further to fall.

Is this against the rules? No. He doesn't require real-life money to participate in the contest, so it's a perfectly legitimate scam (that's got to be an oxymoron...). He doesn't break a single rule, no matter how you look at it. He's just hoping people will give him 20mil. He's simply aiming to earn ISK off of the ignorant or foolish... or he's hoping to make new players quit... Either way, he's doing nothing illegal.

I think that is the real crime here

Bots are extremelly easy to detect with user end detection software please do not belive the hype about how ccp is trying to fight bots because they simply are not. Botting does not effect CCP profits so they don't give two tosses about enforcing it. Now if you start running macro's to RMT you'll find out quickly how easy they are to detect. :)

You also get 3 warnings about botting before you will be banned which just shows how little CCP cares. How many warnings do Real money traders get?

If you want to link a "throwback to the Xfiles" try something like : http://bit.ly/un65oP

Mmm Gillian Andersen.

More specifically it was an awesome episode about a guy who could alter your perception with his voice. He commented on a police officer having a nice cerulean blue shirt or something, and it caused the cop to not see a car that crashed into them. It was one of my favourite episodes. (Don't judge! We're playing a game with molasses physics...that has to be at least a bit stranger.)

First, let me say that I am annoyed at you for making me stand up for CCP.

But it's easy to detect macro's spamming RMT ads... because of the content of the spam. Not because it's easy to detect any bot. When you're done with your hat, I have a sandwich I need to wrap before putting it in the fridge.

Cerulean blue like a summers breeze.... *glazes over*

I approve of this reference.

Also, to the guy who is getting all bitchy that RMTers don't get warning when scambots do... There's a very simple reason for that. RMTers leave a long paper trail and once they catch you, there is no way you could claim to not have grossly broken the rules. You might think its a minor thing, but its not, so screw you. You get ban hammered. People botting to make money inside the game, while also breaking the rules, does not tread on CCPs toes nearly as much and is much much harder to out-right prove, even if you can infer it but it takes a lot of investigating.

The bottom line is that RMTing, is technically illegal, not just a breach of the EULA.

It's also extremely easy for the programmer to get around this minor problem.
