Part 1.

Parts 2 & 3 the next few days.

The awful, wonderful integrity of Plan 9 From Outer Space

"A truly awful filmmaker is a hired gun who only cares about money; Wood was a true cinephile and movie lover, and if he had any interest in financial security, he would have quit the movie business long before his untimely death. The real worst filmmaker ever would produce something no one wanted to watch; many of Wood’s films have been beloved by cultists for decades. "

Most TV shows from the 70s are fairly inept themselves.

Rerun of "The Love Boat" is on, and Sonny Bono's character finds a small stack of $100 bills. About 10 minutes later, he and his wife are discussing the money in bed, and it has magically transformed into a stack of $20's.

Where is MST3K when you need it? Sad

They declined doing a treatment of it. They felt it would be too easy, as it's funny enough on it's own. They did do his "The Violent Years" and "Bride of the Monster".

I used to watch "The Love Boat" every week, just because it was on while I was waiting for "Fantasy Island." I hate to admit it, but looking back, I can't remember really that much to hate about cheesy Fantasy Island. But eventually I was hoping a U-boat would send Doc, Julie, Gopher and Capt. Stubbing to Davy Jones' locker.

What was great was that sometimes the same TV celebrity of the day would be on both The Love Boat and Fantasy Island back-to-back. For example, you could see Charo, Bert Convy, or Adrienne Barbeau as a guest star on one show, then on the other one.

Don't forget JoAnn Worley and Ruth Buzzi (she actually has a Twitter account).

Bert Convy actually directed one motion picture ! Weekend Warriors

Part 2: Grave robbers, flying saucers, and Plan 9 From Outer Space’s other delights

" They’re all footnotes now, but in 1959, Vampira, Tor Johnson, and the Amazing Criswell all enjoyed varying degrees of Z-level celebrity. Criswell made appearances on The Jack Paar Show and published books and a newspaper column. Vampira was a pioneering horror host on Los Angeles television who inspired Elvira, whom she later sued."

Gregory Walcott, who played the lead, actually had quite some success. He played "Norma Rae"s boss in the Oscar winning Sally Fields movie.

Part 3: How Plan 9 From Outer Space earned, and lost, the title of worst movie of all time

"The Golden Turkey Awards book had subtler effects on the future of bad-movie culture. “When I was in college, one of my roommates had the Golden Turkey Awards book,” says Joel Hodgson, creator of Mystery Science Theater 3000. “It was sitting in our dorm. And I thought, ‘Why isn’t anyone making a show with these?’”"

"In Apocalyptic films, major landmarks are the first things to go. In Post-Apocalyptic films, they are all that's left."

I remember Plan 9 being an extra on one of the Destroy All Humans games. Loved that series.
