Ship size and module size

I'm fairly new so could be wrong with this but I thought that ship size and module size had to match. For example, a cruiser (medium) had to have medium sized modules, such as a Medium F-S9 Regolith Shield Induction.

However, looking at some community fits on the Neocom app, I have seen some setups for a Vexor include a Large F-S9 Regolith Shield Induction.

Can anyone advise if these large modules can actually be used effectively on medium ships? Or have I got the ship size module size guideline all wrong?

There are no restrictions that apply to ship size/module size (except, iirc, fitting capital weapons to subcaps). Fitting oversized tanking mods is de rigueur, doubly so for shield tanking.

Edit: undersizing is also an option, of course. Fitting small guns on larger ships can serve a purpose. Also with respect to tanking, undersized deadspace shield boosters are actually incredibly powerful.

That's for the help. Very clear, much appreciated.

Shield extenders and boosters frequently go "up" a size. Armor plates do as well, but usually not armor repairers.

Frigates uses medium
Cruisers uses large
BS and up uses resistance mods.

If I see a Battleship with a Large Shield Extender, then I'm automatically thinking: *sigh* you're doing it wrong sir.

Armor BS have an XL plate (1600mm) but there are no XL Shield extenders. Of course this is the difference between armor and shield so not necessarily needing a "fix"

No.

Only rig size has to match.

This maybe be the norm but not the rule.

I'd ignore his comment.

1600mm plates are perfectly normal for cruisers, and stacking penalties mean that buffer-fit Battleships will typically include one or two LSEs rather than fitting for pure resistances (especially since they will likely have fleet boosts, which count for stacking penalties).
