Discussing the way in which people communicate on these forums

Everyone knows these forums are a harsh place. If you post a bad idea, you will be scolded for doing so. If you post a good idea, you will likely be scolded for doing so too. None the less EVE is a harsh world and this does follow suit. On the other hand, it is the official forums for people to discuss ideas on.

The question becomes: Should communicating in poor taste be allowed?

Is there a precedent for CCP to start banning forum members for distasteful communications?
Or should they allow the communication style that is popular on here to continue on unscathed?

I am seriously bringing this forward as a point of discussion. There is perhaps reasonable point to be made that the aggressive nature of the New Eden universe should spill over into the forums.

With that said I won't lie, my motivation for this thread is coming from here:

In lieue of recent threads making the claim that players do not post on these forums due to the excessive amounts of trolling, the OP of this thread claiming he won't be returning here since he was trolled did indeed stand out a bit.

What is your opinion on the matter?

Poor taste is a point of view. Just because you don't agree with them doesn't mean its in poor taste.
Trolling is a point of view. Just because you don't agree with them doesn't mean they are trolling.

Example; I think this thread is in poor taste.

I think the ISD will also. Roll

Good sensible and polite OPs get treated witht he respect, kindness and intelligent responses they are due (the Art Competition is a good example fo a nice guy having a cute idea that many of us can get behind and he looks like he's done his research)

Humourous OPs are also welcomed, but due to the basis of the post, will of course be open to derailment, but are often taken in their stride by the community and the OP (The recent turret symemetry thread, we went withthe suggestion that the more OCDish of us hate awkward layouts and go to great length to "fix" them, but we all made fun of our own ridiculousness)

Rude OPs, OPs that have been posted over and over, and OPs that are obvious trolls are treated badly in an attempt to discourage either their attitude or repetition of the same beaten-to-death thread. These kind of threads push the buttons of those of us who have a short temper (like me) but also attract allies who seek to argue and inspire trolling.

THe latter is more common than anyone who actually enjoys a sensible debate or a would like it to be.

This is not a thread that belongs in GD, if he would have posted in ships & modules or new citizens Q&A he would not have been trolled. Unless of course he was the one that was trolling but again, that is a matter of opinion.

How about leaving forum moderation to the forum moderators? Of course that doesn't stop you moderating your own replies.

Sadly, there are a ton of loudmouths on the forums who consider corp and alliance affiliation to be a more important judge of "trollness" than the actual message delivered.

Too many people cannot separate the subtle difference between "in-game" and "real life". Forums confuse them even more.

There is already strong evidence that cats are playing in game, its not that far fetched to believe that they may be infiltrating the forums as well....

It's not even that much trolling. Within four replies of the OP there is one, albeit sarcasticly formulated, explanation why it could be considered a bad idea, and also the explanation that there actually are ships with bonusses and that it is in fact possible to fit the damn thing on them.

I like the forum block feature..and use it often.

Didn't read the entire thread you linked but I do agree with the OP of that thread. Exploration loot drops have been nerfed almost to the point of extinction, all the way back to the age of Exodus.

OK, that's my opinion and I'm sticking to it.

As for people not posting very much on the forums due to abusive trolling. Yeah that happens a lot here in General Discussion. Though I will say it's not as bad as it was 5 yrs ago.

My 2 cents is that these forums would be a much better place not only for the readers but for the game in general if something was done about the posters obviously trying to be nothing more than negative and smart a$$.

I am sure they pat themselves on the back each time they feel they "score", but at best they add nothing and discourage other more substantive posters.

Every forum has its white knight defenders and flagrant trolls. They're just more passionate about it over here. Personally, I feel like if the Original Posters were to be more diplomatic in their complaints about this and that then there would be more meaningful debate. However most threads I read with complaints come off as thinly veiled or blatant rants about what's wrong with the game and how this game will die if it's not fixed the way it suits them. That tends to draw a slight bit of ire.

Of course there are posts that are worded delicately but often they belong in other forums and although that doesn't bother me, it probably irks others because posting in GD is an obvious attempt to garner more support than going through proper channels.

Just remember, this is a game full of people who shot at an inanimate object in space for hours in protest of a change they did not agree with. You'd better believe you will be locked in a battle of words if you challenge the status quo. Pirate

Eve has enough good poasters that the the trolls and idiots are a non-issue. However it may take newbies a bit of time to realize that.

As much as I am loathe to admit it, the ISDs (may their nose hairs catch on fire and they die of smoke inhalation. (In game of course, but I would consider LARPing)) actually do a good job at keeping the forums free of the boring trolls/stupid posts.
