TL;DR : This is a post with more than 40 words. If its too much, go check another thread. Or practice your brain more. Whatever.

I want to make short request to all forum participants:

My request is: Stay on topic.

I've noticed a large number of topics being locked down due to topic-derailment. Every now and then a thread gets cleaned up, but most just vanish due to a lock.
I cannot ask moderators to clean threads up instead of locking them. Doing that will result in... exactly.

In real life you can rid yourself of people going off-topic in a discussion by simply asking them to get back on topic, telling them to STFU or even remove them from the room. As on these forums a little sidestep wont end the world, but truly ending a discussion by simply talking about something else cant be solved as easy on a forum as it can be in real life.

My request is: Stay on topic.

Moderators will lock it down if you don't. There can be a 100 useful replies in a thread and a great discussion, but if the last 10 posts are off-topic; the thread will die. I've seen plenty of cool discussions just ending due to a lock. Caused by off-topic nonsense.
I'm not referring to lazy people who make posts without searching or just plainly post useless crap. Burn em I'd say. I'm referring to topics that make sense if viewed from the OP's perspective.

This is not a request to stop trolling. Trolling is not the same as blapping about something else entirely. A proper troll is in fact on-topic and most have a point in there somewhere. Ill admit that this is a personal view not shared by CCP as stated in their forumrules. But trolling has always been about getting away with it as much as anything else. If a thread gets locked due to trolling; its a failed troll. You messed up.

So if you really don't want to share a view; slam a creative troll in there or just read another topic and let others try.

Now if you want to share your view or tell me what you think about my request to you; feel free. This is a discussion forum, so go for it. Keep in mind that discussing moderation itself is against the forumrules. Like you, I have a strong opinion of it, but kept it out of this post. I'm asking you to do the same. Also make sure you understand that discussing whether or not trolling is allowed will create doubleposts. The originals of which are mostly locked. To help you out: "how do you feel about people destroying topics instead of contributing". Or "does it make sense that Yarda asks me to moderate myself?" (just remember to keep away from official moderation by CCP).

On a more serious note.. the one thing I have seen work is if the thread originator continues to participate in and call out replies. If you address the off-topic posts right when they occur, then you have a way of steering the discussion a bit better. Unfortunately this forum moves pretty quickly, so you'd have to dedicate some quality time to doing this.. which may not be possible for everyone.
