Tractor Beam remake

I thought this would've been suggested by now, but such a brilliant idea and still not in the game, I decided to give it a shot.

We should be able to use the tractor beam to pull ourselves to stuff.

Then, if we could fit enough of them, we could just target multiple stuff and use them like a MASSIVE slingshot to catapult our ship KM AWAY to the infinity and beyond !

I think it's a solid idea, what do you guys think? Any suggestions? tweaks?

Whine, whinge and moan until CCP cave in and nuke the ability.

Not sure a tractor beam would have the energy to pull anything bigger than a frigate, but even then, the size of the module and power requirement wouldn't be sufficient to slingshot anything larger than a small container.

I like the jist of your idea though, and not going to write it off. I think a more powerful dedicated 'grappling' unit is more fitting to the idea... but have no idea how to pull it off. It's probably more gimmicky than practical.

Engines.

I hear they are all the rage amongst the "moving your ship effectively" set now.

Scientificaly this doesn't make any sense...

Sort of this. If you wanted to slingshot your ship, you'd have to grab onto something much more massive - like a planet. And even then it wouldn't impart more energy than the beam.

So yeah - stick with those thruster thingees on the back of your ship.

De'Veldrin's Corollary (to Malcanis' Law): Any idea that seeks to limit the ability of a large nullsec bloc to do something in the name of allowing more small groups into sov null will inevitably make it that much harder for small groups to enter sov null.

On the plus side the beam would allow you to turn energy into motion without needing to emit moving matter from a port on your ship. This "ejected fuel problem" is one of the major obstacles to long distance space travel. Getting energy to drive engines is rather easy. Its having enough "stuff" to shoot out of the engines that poses a real issue on long trips.

Now if only we could actually make some kind of magnetism or gravity based tractor beam.
