Since my Typhoon uses cruise missiles, I like the layout like it is. With launchers it works very well. Typhoons don't need any shooty things, they have lots of drones for that.

Symmetry is the cancer eating the soul of current ship design.

Also, some ships (Rifter, Executioner) need the current asymmetric layout or the turrets would have to shoot through the ship to hit targets at certain angles. The devs mentioned this in a blog post back around the time turret animations were added.
