Breaking into pirating

So, I played this game a number of years ago, and I was pretty much a carebear then. Now, Im starting again and I want to be more aggressive and try my hand at pirating. I mean true pirating. Holding ships hostage for isk and stuff like that (i really dont care about obtaining the lowest sec status). How or what would be the best way of going about this? Anyone know people that are willing to take noobs under their wings and show them the ropes? Thanks

How to get started:

Fit a scram, web and have at it.

There are a few new player feindly pirate corps around still I think, but you'll want to check out the recruitment forums for more up to date info:

- The Bastards had a training corp called the Meatshield Bastards
- TEARS is often recruiting and willing to show you the ropes of the high sec pirating part of the game, look for a corp called suddenly ninja's I think.
- BANE had a training corp for a while, but recent forum posts indicates they may not be running anymore.

don't be afraid to just go out and roam low sec and note who else is flying around, you can probably find dozens of other corps willing to show you the ropes just from shooting at them.

Check this blog out
The above linked blog actually ran a series about finding a pirate corp, might be worth a look too.

If you are actively about looking for trouble, don't hesitate to convo the pirate who corners you ( or the prey that got away ) and ask for tips.

Some folk may be a bit upset you interrupted them, but the other trouble makers will likely be a wealth of information.

Good luck and may your prop mod never burn out :)

If you want to hold ships hostage for isk, then you are probably looking for high sec war/mercenary corporation. Most people who call themselves pirates are more like low sec pvpers.

You might want to check the Crime and Punishment and the recruitment forums to see which corps are active and recruiting.

Some notable corps that come to mind are:
Suddenly Ninjas
0rphanage
Noir. (pure mercenary rather than pirate)
Varnoka
Cajun Consolidated

Here are some links to help you out. Some are pirate blogs others are information.

Wensley has an outstanding Rifter write up linked at the top. Sort of a bible you might say. http://www.rifterdrifter.com/

Kane's pirate blog is always a good read and he has been at it for years.

Beginner's guide to piracy Outstanding resource for those getting started and veterans alike.

Hope these help ya out some. I would love to name corp for ya to check out but most have dissolved or changed in the time since I have been gone. Good luck to ya :D

One of the best way to get into pirating is to jump in a frigate or cruiser and just prowl around low sec looking for a fight. One of two things will usually happen; you will find a few clueless people to kill which gives you your taste for blood -OR- you run into professional pirates and they lay the smackdown on you. If the latter occurs, strike up a friendly conversation with them and ask for advice. If you prove yourself knowledgeable or willing to learn then they might offer to take you on board. I got into the best corp I ever joined by cruising around in a solo Arbitrator as a newb and staring down the guns of a pirate Phobos. I joined up about a day later Pirate

Pirates don't think about how to pirate... they just jump into the deep end and start shooting people!

But seriously, if you want to do some pirating, get into a combat ready frigate (guns, afterburner, warp scrambler, stasis webifier, tank, damage mods (your mileage may vary), find your nearest lowsec, get in there and start shooting people. If you concentrate whilst you explode, you will learn very quickly.

Good luck! Always great to see someone starting a murder and mayhem spree!

You can start of as a tackler and work up from there.

One of the most sort after players in the game is the the lowsec gatecamp interceptor.

Your job will not be to kill, shoot or scram just to uncloak.

Almost all non bubble gate camps are fail to the point where most seasoned players can treat lowsec like highsec.

But with a good uncloaker, everything changes. And if you can do it like a boss people will be trying to recruit you from everywhere.

Can always take the privateer route too. Join a faction militia so you will have plenty of targets to hunt. Plus it makes you able to have some safe low-sec territory to operate out of. All in all, tons of benifits, more historically accurate (if you're interested in what pirates ACTUALLY where), and lots of allies to show you the ropes.

Seriously, something to look into.

Im a bit confused here. As far as i know, uncloaking is just turning off the cloak module. How is that really a "skill to be sought after" if im not targeting, shooting, tackling etc? Is it really more of a SUPRISE!!!! tactic and my buddies warp in to me?

All cloaks break if there is something near to the cloaky ship (2000 meters or closer) So a tactic that is used to kill cloaked ships is to get something fast to head to the spot where you last saw the cloaked ship.

To be honest though Karn's post is talking about a gate camp , and you are unlikely to be a camper until you find yourself a corp (although you might well find youself on the recieving end of a gate camp)

I'd stick with the other advice in this thread, fit a cheap rifter and go out and get your feet wet.

Solo in EVE is very difficult. It's one of the few situations you can find yourself in where skillpoints make a reasonable difference, and it also requires a lot of knowledge of ships, fittings, and player behavior.

Sure, you can go out in t1 rifters and have fun - in fact, it's very possible that you'll kill things occasionally - but expect to DIAF, a lot, often without knowing what else you could have done. I'd generally recommend getting into a corp for PVP.

I personally recommend the Agony Unleashed PVP classes. They do charge money for it, and it requires a fair bit of time, but I've never heard a bad word spoken of them. Plus, if you go to a corp with some experience in fleet ops they're far more likely to consider you...Many corps are otherwise afraid of bringing no newbies not because of their SP total, but because they often don't know what the hell they're doing.

Faction Warfare is another option. You don't need to prove anything to get into the basic militia, though don't expect much organization or coordination in the fleets! It's a good way to get your feet wet, though.

+1 to agony classes!

You could also read http://altruist.azual.co.uk/ which has some excellent tips.

I still recommend simply going out and shooting people.
