How to sort out gate activity while scanning for players

I'm trying to learn how to scan for other players with probes in high sec. What I find is that I get a lot of gate traffic and general warping traffic which of course is gone next scan cycle.

Any tips on how to scan for players in missions and not end up with the usual system traffic adding "chaff"?

Mission deadspaces almost always spawn within 4 AU of a planet.

Find a planet that does not have any gates within 4 AU, and start your search there.

You'll still get some warping traffic, but that is part of scanning. Quieter locations (such as 2j from a popular agent instead of 1j) may work better in this regard. Consider the system Sosh (near the popular Sisters L4 agent in Apanake, but Sosh is not really ever travelled through for any other reason, and it's still 0.5 if your goal is a fleet suicide gank).

-Goto the sun
-Open up dscan
-Use overview settings on a overview profile set up to only show probable mission ships such as marauders and faction BSes
-Scan all over
-Pick a target from the several you probably pick up
-Narrow down the range to at least 60 degrees (remember that this is a cone, they can be above or below you too)
-Fiddle with range until you see then drop off (Now you have a vague direction and distance)
-Turn on tactical overlay
-Open solar system map, launch probes
-Use system-wide tactical overlay to plop your probes near his range and direction

If you did all of the above right your first scan might be good enough to identify ship type, to at least confirm your scan result is the target you wanted and from there you narrow down the scan ranges to 100%

If you can really hone this skill you can get someone's general location in open space at a safe spot, launch probes and hit them with one or two scan results. In under 30 second from uncloaking and launching probes you now have a warp to 0 point you can warp to and subsequently get a fleet in with.

Being this fast is especially crucial in WH space where everyone uses dscan like crazy since they can't rely on local to tell them when someone is in system. If they see combat probes on scan they'll sound the alarm and bugger off.

Generally systems are all on the same plane, so what you can do best is to probe OFF the plane (either above or below it), that way you won't get any traffic or people sitting at gates or stations. You will of course miss out on targets that are on the plane but you can be sure that anyone you do find will be mission related.

Yes, yes I am. Thanks for noticing.

This!
(At least for pro scanners).

A lot of new players don't realize this, but you can also use dscan while in the solar system map.

1. Warp to sun
2. Open solar system map
3. Double click on sun to center your view at your location and zoom in as far as possible
4. Rotate view to point at your target
5. Use the sun on the map like a scope on a gun to line up your target
6. Scan

I find this method is much easier than trying to use the tracking camera to rotate and line up your view in space. It also gives you a better feeling for where things are in the system, what is and isn't in scan range, and where you should warp next to get more coverage on the system. It also works nicely with probing because you don't have to leave the map view to check targets with dscan.

Sounds really useful, but I'm having a hard time understanding. Is there a video showing the technique?

Search for "combat probing", that should give you a few vids. Watch'em all because educational content may vary depending on who did it and when and stuff. And then practice, practice, practice.

Another great way is using IDs

A ship when not going through a session change will always keep the same ID on your scanner/D-scan. Thus if you sit on the undock and find out that the ID of your loot pinata is XX-123, then you can scan for that particular ID and ignore the others.
