Modulated Strip Miner IIs

I've just trained the skills to be able to fit Modulated Strip Miner IIs, but I noticed the activation cost is higher. I'm currently flying a Retriever, and I have the Core Ship Operation III certificate, but I sometimes have capacitor problems running two Strip Miner Is, so I'm wondering if I wil be able to run two Modulated Strip Miner IIs.

Did you try reading the ship's capacitor readout, and the activation cost that you just posted about?

Stagger the activations.

This basically. Activate one stripminer, then wait 10-20s to activate the second. Also check in the fittingscreen the ship is actually capstable. If not staggering won't help you either.

I don't get this. I remember back when I was using a Retriever and I could easily run even modulated strip miners, even with occasionally pulsing them.

Maybe you check if you can find some more skills to give you more cap/reduce cap load or something? I skilled most of them to 5.

Wait a moment... Weren't the certificates all erased or something? How can you still have one? Do you mean ship mastery?

The retriever had its capacitor use rate "adjusted" in Kronos. It was on of those "undocumented changes".

A corp mate co-discovered it when on Kronos launch day he could no longer warp to a gate without a mid point for cap recharge in his retriever that he used to do all the time.

CCP falcon posted in the Kronos issues thread about the change after several people posted about retreiver cap issues.

He went on to say that the change appears to have been to aggressive and will be "fixed" in "a few days".

Beyond that, with cycle time reduced cap management will be more of an issue with all barges / exhumers.

The tab on the character sheet still says "Certificates," but yes, I was referring to the "Core Ship Operation" mastery L3.

The fitting window says it is cap stable, and I do stagger my activation times, but it still gets very close to cutting off at times. I probably should have mentioned I usually also fit an Adaptive Invulnerability Field as well, which is also a cap hog.

You don't need the Invulnerability Field running unless you are being attacked, or about to be. If you're running it for rats carry a couple of Combat drones and just 3 mining drones, if it's running for gankers you'll probably die anyway if they catch you.

What are your cap skills? They go a long way to helping too.

If you are going to use the mids for shield instead of survey scanner don't use invuln.

Ancillary rig for the extra pwr and drop in a meta 4 medium shield extender.
1 em rig and 1 shield extender rig with D/C and you got 18k effective health.

You'll be short your scanner and 1 mining upgrade but be a tough nut and have no cap issues. (( 60% stable ))
Also far less risk if the gankers have a few neuts on you.

Scanner with 3rd mining upgrade and just being paper thin will probly bring you more isk in the long run but it's nice to have the extra health if you are dropping into anything 0.7 - 0.5.

I find this sadly ironic, as I repeatedly warned about capacitor usage from the change of yield bonuses to cycle reduction bonuses, and I was repeatedly shot down with comments that it didn't matter.

Train Better capacitor management skills to get more reserve cap, better recharge, etc.

And also get into an Exhumer if you can, those don't really suffer the capacitor or fitting issues of their Tech 1 brothers

Just don't mine in one without a Permit, it could save you 300m one day
