Beginner's Guide to Piloting a Ship by Zena

I know most of you are seasoned pilots here but there's always something new you can learn. Mostly this for anyone new and inexperienced or might be a little scared of flying so they might want some help...

1) It can get cold in those pods, especially on long deep space flights, but there is a heater to help keep you warm. My feet always get cold but after a while it can get a bit hot so don't forget to switch it off. It should be better designed though because my modules stop working when I need them most and I always have to fix them afterwards which is very annoying.

2) Play music in your pod very loudly so you can't hear anything else. Those shield warnings are annoying too and I don't know why anyone would want to listen to that screeching noise.

3) There's a big green button in the middle of your control system called "safety" and I don't really know what it does because it's confusing. I like the colour red most because it's very pretty but it doesn't seem to be very safe. There's even an orange setting so choose the colour you like most.

4) Set your orbit outside the range of your missiles just to be safe. I like missiles because they spark like firecrackers when they eject from my launchers, and if you activate your microwarpdrive at the same time it means they go faster too and so they'll be in range, you don't have to worry about your orbit range too much...

5) As soon as you come out of warp at a gate and target a ship from your overview, the very first thing you do is set your orbit and then shoot because you need to be fast and not make mistakes. I'm still working on this one because it's really annoying how the other pilot's ship never ever gets damaged and the gate's sentry guns always help them.

6) When you're shooting at someone and they're using nanite paste to repair their shields keep going because eventually they will run out and you won't feel like you're wasting your ammunition.

7) When flying a tech 3 ship in Null security space always use an interdiction nullifier subsystem because that's why they're called "nullifiers".

That's all I can think of for now. Perhaps some of you would like to share your own tips on flying a spaceship?

(2) and (3) are very good points. I would recommend these.

I have a contribution of my own;

If you like to win fights against other capsuleers, you should use combat boosters.
If you're a miner or just someone who likes to hang out in their capsule next to their smouldering wreck, feel free to leave combat boosters alone.
If you want combat boosters, you should contact me.

Incidentally, there are new batches of lovely replacement ships on the Jita market as we speak.

I don'f know why but these don't sound like very good advice... Either that or I'm such a bad pilot that I do the exact opposite of what I am supposed to do!

Probably the latter?

Oh I agree! They're not just meant to be functional things ...that would be so boring. Ships are very pretty! Even the ugly ones once they have lots of nice shiny modules. It's amazing how even an ordinary looking ship can become beautiful when you pay attention to what's inside it. One of my favourite ships is the Raven. It's very lovely engineering and I flew one recently but I only had it for a short time because CONCORD didn't like it and destroyed it. I was sad too about that and ... if it's called a Raven why is it grey and not black?

That reminds me!

8) Choose a ship according to the colour you like. It's no good getting something you won't like flying because it clashes with your apparel. If you've spent all that effort putting together a mix'n'match wardrobe to suit your every mood you need to make choices about your ship colours too.

I hear if you try enough times, the Stargates WILL let your Capital ship use them....

Small Hull Reps are very important, on all ships. At least three of them.

Don't forget shield boosters too. If you're repairing both, your ship stays in one piece longer!

It's also always advisable to fit guns of different sizes, to ensure you can hit a target at any range.

I for one takes these efforts seriously.

1. Integrate yourselves with the crew. They are invaluble to your efforts and with their extra eyes can spot a problem before you have seen it yourself.

2. Get involved in the day to day maintence of your ship. Whilst some capsuleers avoid getting covered in oil and grease, I do not shirk that responsibility onto someone else (unless I do not possess the skill or dexterity).

3. Give your ship a good name. It is all well and "hilarious" calling your ship Hooker's Delight or some other discourteous name, but a clear effective name will aid in communications and also seek to give the enemy pause for thought. Alas that CONCORD has limitations on ship names.

4. Pick its armament on what you can safely attach to your ship, whilst giving due consideration to your CPU and Powergrid. You will need that for additional modules.

5. Once this is done, then you are ready to fly your ship in to the dark void.

I will happily, and with a super serious ship name, help you test your fits anytime. Amarr Victor! *giggles*

Actually:

1. Space is vast and full of dangers. Independence from station facilities is essential. Thus, a) hull repper (at least small) is a must, b) armor repper is also a must. Ammo-dependent weaponry sucks, so, lasers with t1 crystals only. Who cares if it's a Maelstrom.

2. Drones tend to easily die or get lost. You can't rely on them to do anything. Fit at least couple of Small Dual Beam Lasers to ensure you can hit enemy frigate tacklers. It's called Point Defence! Yeah.

3. Cap stability is a difference between life and death. A cap stable ship is an invincible juggernaut of destruction.

4. Evil men prowl the skies, always on the search for a hepless victim. But we are not helplesssss, yes? Fit ECM at all times to ensure your survival!

5. Also, don't forget to fit a cloak. Sudden appearance of a mighty battleship on the field will shock and dishearten your foes (then, ECM them!)

6. Warp core stabilizers! Always fit at least one so no one can touch your core!

7. Large cargo bay helps you to conveniently carry all your stuff around. Turn your ship into home away from home by expanding the cargo space!

I dare to recommend this helpful fit I've put together:
