Because invention is chance based. Invention doesnt give 100% success rate, not even close.

You can improve your chance with skills, meta items and decryptors used in the process, but it's still chance/luck based.

Now that you found out that invention is chance-based, a few words in case you do decide to go the inventor route.

Yes, overall, invention IS profitable even with that chance of failure to invent, and somewhat profitable even at average-ish skill levels.
In fact, it's quite profitable with a nearly-maxed skillset, if you know which items to pick (hint : usually, the more are being sold on the market in their size class on a regular basis, the better).
Picking the right items (warning : math needed in high quantities) is usually much more important than having higher skills.

To somewhat protect yourself from less frequent but expectable streaks of bad luck, you should usually invent in larger batches of around 20 minimum, preferably even up to 100 or so (as in, have everything you need to start the invention of that many batches plus enough materials to build at least a few items with the resulting BPCs).
Anything less is too much of a gamble rather than a business.
If you don't have the funds to start that off, you should probably take up a different profession in the meantime as you gather some more funds.
Or at least pick another item that has a lower per-batch invention cost first.

probably you're inventing ships.

imho don't bother. try it with items first. 1 run is about 1-3 hours in NPC station so even with 1 slot you'll get some successes inventing for several days.

invention chance is topped at 50% with 2 datacore skills and relevant encryption methods all at 5. so practically it's max about 47% or 44% with average skills, which is pretty much visible as you don't always get half sucesses of all runs, usually less.

always invent max run BPC so you'll get maximum possible 10-run copies for your datacores.
