'Game of Thrones' whacks 'The Sopranos' to become HBO's most popular show ever

"With two episodes remaining in the fourth season, Thrones has an average gross audience of 18.4 million viewers across all platforms. That surpasses the previous record set by the 2002 peak season of The Sopranos, which had an average gross audience of 18.2 million viewers per episode."

Whats more shocking from that is that the first episode of the sopranos was 15 years ago. Shocked

It's like game of thrones. Only with the mafia and guns instead of swords and dragons and things.

But families struggling against each other? It's totally got that.

Those stats look impressive until you try to work out the total number of HBO viewers.

Eastenders hit 30m viewers in the UK in 1986 according to a this highly reliable source.

Even if they try to resurrect this via GoT I seriously doubt it's sustainable, unless GRRM turns over his ideas to scriptwriters.

No they look impressive because they are impressive - shows on non-subscription channels rarely have this much viewership.

HBO is a dinosaur. This way of content delivery should die, and quickly.

...and that's on a broadcast network.

GoT is CABLE subscription, a much smaller pool.

In fact, it's too expensive for me to pay for a full year (around $950). I'd buy the Blu Rays at $60 a year.

Reminds me a lot - right down to the same conclusion - of my own recent adventures trying to watch the Daily Show and Colbert from outside the US, now that some pointy-haired boss at Comedy Central has seemingly decided they've had enough of those filthy advertisement dollars coming from people living anywhere else in the world, and started blocking non-American interwebs users from legally watching their shows.

True, but British viewers have a different perpective to others because of our broadcasting history. Some shows from the 70s and 80s used to attract an enormous market share (mainly because we only had 3-4 channels). Those broadcasts had a much deeper cultural impact than TV now, literally everyone watched them, and talked about them. Even though GoT is hitting a larger audience it's linked to certain demographics, those older shows were cross-demographic.

I see your point though.

Yeah. Don't get me wrong, I love the show and I think it's the best thing on T.V. but I'm not going to pretend it has the same impact as, say, Doctor Who.

GRRM already has turned over his ideas to the show's two creators. They know the ending, and they will be proceeding without the novels if necessary.

From what I've seen so far, with the exception of the first book, the show is better anyhow.

That's amusing, since he doesn't even know the ending. I can find no mention or proof of this anywhere.

There may even be an 8th book.

from my understanding GRRM has a "rough" idea where he wants to take the tale. enough so that, in terms of interpretation for the show, the creators could bring it to a conclusion in the event the books are not finished first.

it doesn't matter. i've read all the books that have come out and watch the show both. i'll read any and all further books that come out. i'm a total fangirl and i am completely unashamed of this fact.

So we just sat down with him and literally went through every character.

They may know how most characters turn out, and how situations play out. But nowhere does it say they specifically know the ending. Especially since it is not even written.
