OP had me hooked at the whole depressingly and pornographically grotesque part... then watched video.
Apparently we have drastically different standards when it comes to depressing, grotesque and pornographic.
Now I'm sad and disappointed.

Really was hoping they'd manage to pull this off, but life happens.

Come hell or high water, this sick world will know I was here.

This is the same kind of ******** backwards logic people use to suggest that video games/heavy metal/violent movies cause kids to shoot up schools.

Until sufficient amounts of imbeciles actually listen to them, that is.

Dear OP,
In the same way that a healthy person with a peaceful mind is invisible to psychology and seen as insipid to the carnival of vanity that passes for human life, so your concerns about the corrosive effect of concentrated horror as entertainment will be a non-starter.
Take heart though, most people interested in this sort of thing are intelligent, bland suburbanites. The small amount of sick people attracted will always find something to focus their pathology on and are never indicative of the wider audience*.
EvE already ticks all the boxes WoD had anyway, immortal elite powerful demigods vying for dominance under endless night, yep sounds like Placid FW lowsec to me.

Perhaps, but EVE is not as visually grotesque and leaves much for the imagination.

WoD didnt.

We cant even harvest corpses in EVE for implants. In WoD, corpses are a food source. Yuck.

In EVE, on the other hand, the death of several million people per hour is the main source of income and monetary sustenance for the capsuleer community.

But still, there are many who patiently await exactly that feature to arise some day. In the meantime it might be that they count their collectible Meat Popsicles every now and then.

My point.
Incarna could have been ( I am purely speculating here) a result of CCP needing 3d animated characters for a world that was humano-vampiro centric...
I do not know if the concept of incarna would have been pursued on its own if there was not a potential use for it with WOD.
If this was the case, they probably judged at the time that the synergy was viable, without forecasting the EVE player base's reaction to this.

Somewhat not exactly. As someone else mentioned CCP created Ambulation back in 07ish and was tech demoed at Fanfest 08. While slimmed down graphically from what we have now it was more functional. However after they began WoD creation which created the basis for the Carbon Design they switched over to that for Eve(Incarna) since they could utilize it on both games.

Maybe it's just me, maybe I just don't "get it," but I found the theme of WoD to be depressingly and pornographically grotesque.

Seriously, I have no idea what you are talking about. The porn is only soft (and i really don't know what's wrong with that ...). What I find disturbing is the graphic violence, though.

Fantasy is fun. But it's just fantasy. There are no real Orcs among us. No magic casting wizards or cloaked rogues. No immortal capsuleers flying around in space. However, the behaviors in WoD are actually practiced by some very sick people in RL that remain under the radar.

There are also no real vampires among us. And as long as "this behaviour" (whatever you referring to with that vague expression, anyways) is consensual and nobody gets maimed or dies, I don't care.

p.s.: omg, this forum filters abbreviations of pornography. What is wrong with you people?!
