Ambulation 2008: a tale of a past future lost

WiS is dead.
Incarna was a unmitigated disaster.
WoD has been the worst development disaster in CCP's history.
EVE is about spaceships only and will always be.
WiS apologists are mostly exctinct.
All WiS threadnaughts are gone and closed.

But nonetheless, I digged the Guardian article's links, and found an interesting article on what Ambulation was supposed to be, back in 2007, and looking forward to its release in 2008.

So I will link that article here, as a tale from a past future that was lost somewhere in corporate change of mind.

This was the game we could have been playing for the last 6 years:

http://www.warcry.com/articles/view/previews/2611-EVE-Online-War-on-the-Impossible-Part-3-Ambulation

Maybe they were biting more than they could chew, but that article shows how neither CCP nor those who took their word years ago were racing into a void. There was content for Ambulation, that was refitted for Incarna (like the original CQ) or dismissed (like the concept of station side professions). Most of the current clothing still is from Ambulation, with free plain looking stuff, and more expensive and exclusive clothing options for sale. Et cetera.

Ambulation/WiS/Incarna was not a leap into a void. (If) It could had been implemented in its 2008 version, it would had stood a chance to succeed and expand EVE into a larger niche, maybe one with more female players, and certainly one with more mainstream players, all of them segregated from the spaceships game. Two worlds living together and never interacting for their own good.

In my own biased opinion, EVE would be a much healthier game if it had Ambulation 2008, merely by having a larger niche. And provided that most of the Incarna stuff was actually developed by WoD teams since Reykjavik's art team couldn't be arsed to do avatar content, it turns that CCP managed to screw two games with one terribly misdeveloped concept that changed horses mid race.

It's a shame, frankly.

Q: Should we be worried? A: Nope. (...) Worry a lot if Fozzie, Masterplan, Rise, Veritas, Bettik, Ytterbium, Scarpia, Arrow, or even Greyscale leaves. Worry a little if Punkturis, karkur, SoniClover, Affinity, Goliath, or Xhagen leaves.

It's the past. Let it rest already.

I support WiS

I am just here to snuggle and do spy stuff.

I'm all for female players, as long as they play for the right reasons. WiS would not have attracted those types of players.

Enjoying the rain today? ;)

Shame they never finished it, it could have been really good. Though what I was really rooting for was shooting in stations.

I have tried to work out how a female player could play Eve for the 'wrong' reasons any more than a male player can...

Below is a comprehensive list of ways in which female players could do so:

The only hope for WiS (in some form) we have left is CCP's greed and the industry's continuing drift towards microtransactions and buy-to-play.

One can't possibly chain his main money-making product to a loyal, but slowly shrinking, base of middle-aged multiboxing spreadsheet neckbeards. Any manager who has bits of sanity left should seek paths to rectify this situation. Stealthily, maybe. Boiling the frog slowly to avoid enraging the "core player base". But that hope is slim.

But for now, let the undead horse rest in its misery. Those WiS threads cause phantom pains and nothing more.

What gets me is how WiS is supposedly dead but vanity items for your toon continues on in the Eve store.

I'm gutted, always wanted to transition my skill set from 160m SP pvp combat pilot to Neophyte Cobbler.

I'd have been the Jimmy Choo of Eve... Such a tragedy..

If walking in stations is as slow as it is now, then no thanks. If they let you jog or run around then that would be an upgrade and you guys could call it WJRiS. Perhaps they could have put in a mini game where you have to keep your plants watered or they die and cost you Isk to buy new ones, and we could have a furniture store in New Eden where we could pimp out our little pad. Hell even let us upgrade to the presidential space suite and have npc servants...but would that really be a good idea?

If anything I would love to see them implement something more along the lines of ship boarding parties and the chance to take over ships and bring them back to our corp hq, or PoS, if successful. That would bring a ground combat experience to the game adding a new dynamic with all new skills and fitting options for your character.

only thing in WIS that made sense to me was the fact that they were also thinking on war rooms that collected real-time intel from pilots.

that and a corpse room.

Personally, I wanted to open a bar in a seedy losec station but alas, CCP ****** it all up. Concept aside, CCP was always good on the execution side of a plan...

People got, justifiably, angry because of "18 months" and "1000$ pants". For now, let it rest and maybe, maybe pick it up later.

If WiS is truly dead than CCP should remove the captain's quarters from the game, as they are now they only serve as a monolithic sized reminder of how CCP seems inclined to introduce epic new features that could have revolutionized EVE, only to let them sit incomplete and unrealized in a "proof of concept" state.

Imagine if other big name MMO makers like Blizzard and Trion did that with their games, people wouldn't tolerate it from them and yet somehow this sort of practice is acceptable from CCP.

WiS - "Walk in station" The ability to leave your ship and explore the station you are docked in.

Incarna - An EVE release that failed miserably.

WoD - "World Of Darkness" another MMO the EVE people were working on.
