Why Im glad WoD was canned.

I'm not looking at this in terms of employment numbers or layoffs.

I'm looking at this in terms of game content.

Maybe it's just me, maybe I just don't "get it," but I found the theme of WoD to be depressingly and pornographically grotesque.

Now, there will be the element of game playing society so desensitized by all the 'sickness' in the media and world that they will view my opinion as juvenile. "We are adults aren't we?" - is always the catch-all excuse for the proliferation of sick behavior today. "As long as no one gets hurt" -is the other one.

But looking at this for the first time, I see how this product would be hard to merchandise.

Who is your target audience? Blood and necrophilia fetishists?

Fantasy is fun. But it's just fantasy. There are no real Orcs among us. No magic casting wizards or cloaked rogues. No immortal capsuleers flying around in space. However, the behaviors in WoD are actually practiced by some very sick people in RL that remain under the radar.

This cuts to the very heart of mental illness under the guise of entertainment.

Good call CCP on canning this project. You have saved your reputation from future backlash. Had it been released, this project would have died anyway, sooner than you think. You can do better and I think you know it.

Rant over.

Mankind has always been fueled by sex, greed, and violence. Games can work as an outlet for those desires to keep them in a fantasy setting, instead of spilling over into RL actions. There will always be sadistic crap in the world, there will always be those who can't separate fantasy from reality. However to avert your eyes from it is equally foolish, to try and over sensitise things especially entertainment will only cause those to seek it out. In the same way making something illegal can cause more people to be drawn to it, the forbidden fruit.

Ironic you chastise WoD theme while ignoring Eves, which plays on similar concepts just masked under Sci-Fi instead of fantasy. Lets not ignore that Eve in general promotes slavery, sex, drugs, and violence.

I will not judge the WOD concept and IP. It has its fans, and to each their own entertainment as long it does not encroach in other people's free will and freedoms.

Now, I have never been a big fan of CCP merging with White Wolf in the first place. I even wonder how much of it lead to the catastrophically misguided incarna project....
I am also glad to see CCP ditch this project and keep their focus on the Eve universe..

I have my reserves on DUST and Valkyries but at least they develop them within the EVE overarching universe, and certainly the last updates released for EVE have been showing that CCP has it's priorities in order and keep working on the spaceship game that in the first place built their reputation.

Doreen makes some very well founded points, I agree with her as far as CCP canning something that does not relate to internet spaceships (Eve) at all. The mistake as pointed out in the Guardian article was enough proof in the pudding, BUT it came with a price to pay in the end. The community lost those who worked on this were laid off or left voluntarily and I feel for those people as well.

What we are seeing tho is not just with CCP, rather it's going through the industry as a whole.

Erh, I'm pretty sure there is a market for ****-suckers-online.

What's wrong with a bit of necrophilia anyway? I class the over 40s as the undead. They definitely have circulatory problems. And cold feet.

THis is exactly what people were saying in 1994 when Magic the Gathering butchered the RPG industry overnight.

It came back, though its still not at the level it was in 1992

The article had to do with poor management and lack of direction, not diverting into another genre.

Also the mentality for CCP to be a single IP company is also shortsighted and risky from a company standpoint. While WoD was a mistake for the fact that they were spread thin development wise, and didn't have a clear goal in mind for the game. The idea of branching out into the WoD series wasn't a mistake.

I'l disagree and feed the troll.

CCP trying to make WoD was brilliant at the time. Vampires were and still are huge. Even before twilight, the underworld and blade movies were big.

The problem, CCP spread its self WAY too thin. And they started looking at other ways to make money. If they had focused on EvE and WoD, and not splintered into Dust/whatever random hair brained idea they had to make money. the story would be different.

Right now a focus on eve is good. In a few years, if this new venture is successfully, they can still go back and relook at WoD and put some time into it.

Having all your eggs in one basket is risky. It is either going to pay off huge, or fail huge. We will see.

OMG Comet Mining idea!!! Comet Mining!

I doubt it'll go anywhere. The recent blog post by DJ Funky Bacon really said it all. Might also read the Guardian article too if you haven't already.

They were using the WoD programmers to develop Eve, using the WoD code to develop Eve, pretty much nullifying your whole spiel.
