The ones in Hi-Sec do 1000 damage. It's apparently unresisted. Knowing it could do decent damage, I actually attempted my first one with a tanked Tarya and it easily soaked the 1000 points of damage the can caused when it exploded. I later tanked a Heron to over 1000 EHP with an Invulnerability Field and it was destroyed after sustaining 940 points of damage when attempting the site.

Similar experience here - explosion mid hack in .8 space took out my Heron with DC1

I chose the wrong trade...

Another thing is bugging me. On a relic site, 3 of the 5 crates seemed already opened. I doubt someone left the site half done, there were only a couple dudes more in system. On the 2 i hacked, 1 had 1 carbon, other was empty.
As for the other 3, at least one i couldn't open. Relic analyzer didn't work on it. Salvager didn't work on it. For the heck of "why not", data analyzer didn't work. After a couple minutes, it sploded. I didn't even bother with the other 2, carried by an evening of 1 carbon drops and impenetrable loot crates.

New player here trying out exploration. Fitted a T1 frig for scanning and hacking and all that, took me awhile because I've been reading up on what I needed and how to do it. Then flew around trying to find a site to scan down. Finally found something after a bit. Then took me quite a few minutes to scan it down, but I found it! A contested guristas research facility. Warped to it, and was pretty excited. Got close enough to lock it....then it exploded in my face, right as I locked it.

So....I guess you never know when they'll just up and explode your ship? Seems pretty dumb, now flying back in my capsule....last time I'll try exploring in a frigate, or at all probably. I've been blown up in pvp, and that's actually fun....this though? Nah. Waste of time. What's the point of using a frig and spending all that time when you just get blown up instantly. What did I do wrong?

Warped in, spend 10-20 sec adding container to overview ... and then baam! Didnt even know what hit me.

Found one, hacked it with data analyzer, finished no problem, ship instantly exploded.

Eve will make you work a solid month all on your own for your first cookie. Then kick you in the nuts and take that cookie, and laugh at you for thinking you could have a cookie at all.

Wow, I've been exploring in nullsec.. low sec before that.. but was in a system hunting for a wormhole and saw a datasite. What the heck.. let's just see what's there. Scanned, couple mil.. could be worth it.

..it almost blew my helios up! a few ticks shy of it blowing up.. Shocked

I didn't read the memo that high sec was more dangerous to explore than null! lol

I think this thread is talking about two different issues.

1. If a can appears to be already hacked, but when you try to open it a message pops up that you need special tools, and then when you try to hack it, it says no tools required... I believe this is a bug. This is what happened to me:
a) hacked a container in a data site but my cargo was full so i couldnt loot everything from the container
b) warped to a station to empty out my cargo hold
c) warped back to the same can and got the messages above.

2. Guiristas Research exploding can is something completely different. I too have lost two probes over the last two days. Again this is what happened:
a) warped to the location to find only one unhacked container
b) scanned it to see there was a guiristas "thingy" inside (cant remember the name of it atm)
c) the first time, i had a successful hack and took the item. and then my ship was dead.
d) next day... same thing, but this time. ship exploded the moment i clicked the first node in the hacking maze.

I'm not claiming to understand what's going on... im just saying that both of these have happened to me, and they arent the result of the same issue. In fact, the reason im even reading this thread it to find some answers to the exploding can.

My question: so if i run into another of these gurista containers.... i should leave and go get a super duper strong tanked ship before attempting the hack? or is this a bug or glitch and I should just stay the hell away?

My guess is that its a new thing on Guristas data sites since they removed the cans spew. To keep things interesting? Wonder if there are any other new tricks on other site types?

is there a difference if the site is in lowsec or in highsec, i did my first one just now in lowsec and it exploded while i was hacking it, simply while i was pressing nodes it said hacking failed and popped

both my experiences were in high sec. but they were both 0.5 systems so i dont know if that creates any difference. it's been suggested that if the person who originally warped to the site is still in the system, you wont be able to even hack it... it will blow you up at the first click of a node. Can anyone confirm this?

I found 2 of these contested covert sites today, first one I blew up mid hack for no reason.

The second one I just went to. As soon as I attempted to data analyze/target, clicked BOOM. Dead.

lost collectively about 40 mill today.

This is a joke, no warning no explanation. Maybe they will start implementing exploding stations too so when we dock we randomly blow up. It makes about as much sense as this does. So furious.

Personally I am positively giggling as all the risk-adverse "explorers" think formulaic, no-risk, no-tank is the current meta. Let there be site explosions!

I have to agree. I've run several in both high and low. Sometimes they blow up. More frustrating, sometimes there's nothing there. I'd much rather have the explosion.

Of course, I'm not flying an untanked covops. Because, come on.

People losing multiple ships and quitting in frustration = Darwinism in action.

If you explode once because you poked the new shiny thing and didn't know what it did, fair enough (I didn't know about the exploding but I explore in a cruiser hull as I'm paranoid) If you repeatedly poke the thing you already know from first hand evidence explodes fragile ships, then run to the forums to complain instead of the patch notes or reading threads... cool. More sites for the rest of us :)

Are you joking? There already is plenty of risk especially for newer players. Lot's of us cant even defend ourselves and continuously get jumped and killed, or the sites are stolen from underneath . Rather than laughing and thinking its funny and that a game breaking bug should be be kept in game maybe you should try learning more about how hard and risky exploration actually is.

By your logic maybe asteroids should start randomly blowing miners up?

Thanks for the advice really helpful there champ. Way to bring something productive to the issue at hand. You with your luxurious cruisers. So I guess new players with small frigs are just suppose to blow up and die with no recourse on a profession they chose only weeks later to find out if you explore you will randomly blow up and lose everything.

Oh my god you just called nullsec exploration in a 500k isk nearly unfitted T1 frig "hard and risky". I've barely muffed my laughter to keep my coworkers from asking why I'm laughing at a computer.
