Apple iMac troubles

Hi all,

I know that this isn't really the place to put this but here goes.

I have a refurbished 21" iMac and I got it about three years ago from Apple themselves.

EVE runs perfectly and I've had no real trouble with it, so I thank the guys in the CCP Apple Dept immensely.

My issue is that when I turn the iMac on, the screen flickers, for a few seconds or until the user login screen shows, it varies each time, and then the screen (the whole monitor/display) goes dark.

I've looked online at the Apple forums and answers vary from Inverter trouble to abnormal pressure in the screen itself.

Seeing as you guys are the most experienced I can think of without going to Apple first, I would like to know your opinions.

In addition, I cannot get any information out of the iMac once the screen goes dark and I have to press the power button to reset the machine.

Resetting the machine will lead to another episode of the screen flickering and then going dark again, or the screen flickering and then stabilizing allowing me to run EVE and other apps.

The most times I have had to reset the iMac with the power button has been three times.

I appreciate your time in this matter and I hope that there is nothing serious enough for me to send it off for repairs, and have to use a Windows 8 laptop, (shudder).

My guess is your Logic board ( which contains the Gfx card on the iMac's) has went bad. or the screen is suffering from a bad connection/backlighting failure.
Either way.. you should have went to Apple first, not here.
Either failure is not cheap to repair, so you are probably looking at a new mac.

You can try resetting your pram. Hold PR I think when booting up.
Used to be you could basically reboot your logic board that way or by holding the power button down tell you hear a chime (10-15 sec)

Also why I am thinking about it. Try unplugging and hold the power button for 15-20 sec. That used to be the best way to reset the logic board. The new thin iMacs don't have that feature.

Thanks for the tips.

I'll try out amarisen's idea later tonight.

I did find that buy moving the mouse around, as if to wake up the iMac, seemed to stop the flickering.

I'll give that another go later to see if it is, what worked.

Nanvel, I'd rather try to save the current iMac but if needs must I'll get a brand new one from Apple, not a refurbed one.

Thanks again.
