m'kayyyyyy............

Id watch the hell out of that movie if they would have gotten Bill Murray instead of Tom Cruise.

God damn that would be surreal. I'd keep imagining Murray fighting as his character from Stripes. Shocked

Argh!

There are just to many Sci-Fi films I think are great, among the ones I like to re-watch:

  • Serenity
    • 2001
    • Original Star Wars Trilogy
    • Akira
    • Ghost in the Shell
    • Alien (First X Rated film I watched)
    • Bladerunner

Clunkers beyond belief and understanding of man, that I have been unfortunate to have actually watched:

    • Moontrap (Saw premier at 1984 World Con, everyone left in silence)
    • Second Star Wars Trilogy
    • Howard the Duck
    • The Avengers (The British over the top Secret Agent in a Top Hat variety, not the US Comic lot)
  • Myfanwy Heimdal

Alas that was a dreadful remake of the very excellent 1960s series.

Alien was rated X? Why, because a woman speaks without first being spoken to?

Oh, I actually just watched Moon for the first time. It is pretty great. I like how they made such a great movie using only a handful of actors. Sam Rockwell and Kevin Spacey, and then that's about it other than side characters who aren't even really in the plot.

I have a bit of a man-crush on Sam Rockwell, too. The guy just makes every movie he's in. Remember Galaxy Quest? "You're not gonna die on the planet, Guy." "I'm not? Then what's my last name?" "It's um.... I don't know..." "Nobody knows. You know why? Because my character isn't important enough for a last name, because I'm gonna die five minutes in!" "Guy, you have a last name." "DO I? DO I?? For all you know, I'm "Crewman Number 6"!"

"There's a, um... red thingy, uh, moving toward the green thingy...."

I can find 200000 faults and plot holes with it, but I will watch Pacific Rim over and over.

    Hehe!
Then you will love the real reason the BBFC (British Board of Film Classification) gave

Daily Telegraph - The real reason Alien was rated 18

'The science fiction movie Alien was banned for under 18s because the monster was thought to be too sexy and presented a "perverse view" of reproduction, archival material reveals' Shocked

As for The Avengers I still remember Diana Rigg as Emma Peel Big smile

If they see that film as sexual, I have to wonder about their own sex lives.

Worst would probably have to be Attack of the Killer Tomatoes. No wait, there are worse, e.g. Highlander II.

I just watched Equilibrium. It's cyberpunk, very much sci-fi. The core philosophy of sci-fi is to extrapolate on human advancement and tell a story that hasn't happened yet but could happen. Cyberpunk tells grim tales of dystopian societies in which a few elites control the masses through various ruthless means, often contradicting their own ideals. It is common in such stories for the elite to paint a clean, flawless fantasy world around themselves to cover up the broken and tattered world beyond that they have forsaken.

Equilibrium is some excellent science fiction, and I loved it!

I really enjoyed Enemy Mine. What is funny is that Brazil, one of my favorite films, was passed over by Hollywood Executives for this gem.

I don't see the appeal of Enemy Mine. I like the basic idea that two races at war can come together, but what makes the movie difficult for me to stomach is the unlikability of Dennis Quaid's character. Right from the outset, I feel like these aliens are good people, and I spend pretty much the whole movie waiting for the human hero to come around. I kind of wish the human had died and the alien could have gotten help from someone actually helpful.

It was like District 9 in that way, only without all the cool effects and much better dialogue and character development.

Also, both of those movies had a very distinctly black alien who was completely passive and helpful being misunderstood by a clearly white human who had grown up learning to hate black aliens for no reason. I acknowledge the realism but I don't like to watch it.

I completely understand that line of thought as I have heard the complaint before.

I was raised in the south and this movie struck deep and hard. It was one of the catalizing moments in my life that led me in a path of understanding and tolerance as opposed to blatant ignorant racism (discovering the band Anthrax was even more catalizing). It mimiced what happened in my part of the world, as it did others, and it just so happened to cast two actors of opposing skin color. Unfortunatetly, during that point in time actors in Hollywood came in pretty much one color (Top billing actors of the 80's) Ugh so unless you think that it would have been better if two of the aformentioned actors had been used instead of one of them and Lou Gosset Jr (who performed epically in the movie imo) then the casting was spot on.

But yes, this movie was the Sci-Fi Civil War and it was supposed to portray some simpleton having to come to terms with to complete idiocy of their point of view.

Fake Edit: Quaid is kind of a middle man when it comes to acting but I believe the writting for his role was spot on; they had to cut cost somewhere Lol. Gosset carried the movie, even with the clicks and clacks.

I thought Gosset did great. It was Quaid that sucked, and he's usually such a great actor. Oh well.

...and just how can an alien from another planet possibly be "African-American" ????????

The character is just from another non-human race.

The character was played by an African-American, and of course the movie is about racism. But that character is not black.
