The distrib choice really is about what you want to do with it and the philosophy behind it.

If you don't care for what's behind the scene and consider your system as a simple tool then definitely go for Ubuntu.

Arch suits me better as I like to know how things work.

I'm just like you. I've finally worked my way down to programming in assembly language just because there are some places in computers that are still gray areas for me. I think that Jesus was the only programmer who could work in assembly language without knowing how computers work. Big smile

I don't think many people want to treat their computer as much more than an instrument - you usually tinker not in a hammer but with a hammer, don't you? Smile

I would certainly recommend Ubuntu or one of its derivatives (Xubuntu, Kubuntu, Linux Mint) for new converts Smile

Excellent comment.

Well I'm kind of strange about things like that. For instance, when I was 14 I decided I wanted to learn how to be a good driver, but it is illegal to drive whn you are 14 in most of the US. So I took a job as a 'pump jockey' at a filling stations, so I could talk to people about cars and their experiences with them.

Then I took a job as a mechanic, because I wanted to know what was in cars and why it was there. (Still not old enough to drive.) When I turned 16 I bypassed the normal drivers license and went for a commercial license. I didn't have any problems with the test or the test drive. I held that license for nearly 20 years.

As far as hammers go , , , well, I took a few metallurgy and non-destructive testing courses in college. I know how to make hammers, as well as what happens inside one when you hit something with it.

For some reason, early in life, I decided that knowing what something is for doesn't mean that you understand what it is.

@ Kismeteer:

OK, I think I have finished step 3. The next step is installing Eve from the off-line distro. But it doesn't seem that we have the same setup. I have two HDs, one Ubuntu and the other Win XP. I switch between them by physically changing the cables inside the box.

I assume that, if I download the off-line files they will end up in my downloads directory, where I told Opera to store stuff.. I'm on the XP HD right now, so I can't check where the files will go. So what kind of changes do I need to make in the scripts to get everything working together?

You just download it, somewhere.

Then, on linux, you use a file manager to browse to it's location and right click on it.

It's the one GUI part of this setup.

Cool. I'll try that in a few minutes. I figured out how to know where the files will end up, too.
