They were always more of a thought experiment than an actual technology. Any civilisation capable of building one would have perfected nuclear fission long beforehand, which is a much more efficient technology.

I believe it's simply a difference of opinion where to set ones standards. The amusement Diana Kim provides though is not in the use of irony and wit to mock an social issue or ideology by pretending to subscribe to them but rather that they do in fact seem to really believe what it is they say and thus manage to only mock themselves oblivious to how stupid they appear to others.
