Welcome to EVE.

You have indeed stumbled over the largest problems new players face in this game. Unfortunately, there is little advice to be had in this area other than “keep at it”. There are some proper institutions that will pick up new players and let them run wild, but a huge amount of corps are what you have just described: a fancy outward image with nothing behind it (except maybe some corp taxes that you won't get back).

Don't worry about your corp history. Any proper corp will understand that it takes a couple of tries to get it right. In fact, most proper corps will probably be something of the opposite of what you've come across: nothing fancy to inflate their purported exploits, but rather just some basic contact info. Look for those instead. One thing to remember here is that some of them will require some kind of pseudo-interview to get in — remember that the interview goes both ways. You need to figure out if they're a good fit for you just as much as they need to figure out if you're a good fit for them.

A slightly more counter-intuitive way to find a corp is to remember that failure is both an option and not optional: there are plenty of stories about players who have gone into lowsec to get blown up over and over, and who have then ended up being recruited into the corp that shot at them. After all, they've demonstrated the kind of determination and spunk that the corp likes to see. It's hardly a guarantee, but it is a way to start communicating with other players and make that first problematic connection. Big smile

Any pvp corp that doesn't do an interview, provide links to their killboard when asked or require an api that they actually check is to be avoided. I am shy of recuiting people that don't also try and interview me about the corp. If they don't have standards and want to check we meet them then they are unlikely to meet ours.

Money at its root is a form of rationing. When the richest 85 people have as much wealth as the poorest 3.5 billion (50% of humanity) it is clear where the source of poverty is. http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2014/jan/20/trickle-down-economics-broken-promise-richest-85

Nobody really cares about that, don't worry. It's a story miners tell each other to feel good about never changing anything.

While i realize that the above comment is not really serious i want to comment anyway, because its partly right.

I was completely serious. Shocked

If you have JUST started, and are truly a new player and not just a spai, skill point loss isn't much of an issue.

Create a couple of different characters in different starter corps; you pick the corp when you pick the bloodline of your chosen race. You may be surprised to find that a couple of the starter NPC corps have a robust community and ties to player-run corps as well; personally, I recommend School of Applied Knowledge (Caldari race, Achura bloodline). It was thus quite some time before I left that starter corp.

From building bonds in the starter corp, you can better choose any number of player corps or start your own. Or stay in the starter corp for a little while longer, since it is not particularly restricting for the new player in the least. You may eventually outgrow it, however. If that time comes, you'll know when and what it means.

OP - most pubbie corps (ones that you would join from the corp finder in game) are horrible. Join a corp based on an out-of-game community or at least one that has some definition like E-uni, RvB, Fweddit, BNI

Im a fairly new player and I'm jumping from corp to corp, ruining my employment history trying to find a place where I could have some fun.

Problems:
1."Yeah we are super active" - 2 player online all day
2."We are super social" - teamspeak is dead
3."Yeah we are EU tz" - they wait for the us comrades to join and then the ops takes place
4."Yeah we do pvp fleets everyday" - nothing is happening

This is my first MMO so maybe I dont know how "guilds" actually look like, but if your corp has 4 active members please dont tell me 10-15.

Check a corps details, it will tell you many members that corp has
to get a rough estimate of actual players (excluding alts) there are, do 2 sums
divide it by 3
divide it by 5

it won't always be accurate, but it can give a reasonable guestimate as to real numbers that you could be looking at

there are several sites where you can lookup players, corps & alliances
eve who
battleclinic
zkillboard
to check those various claims .. pretty sure there are others aswell
maybe someone else will link them for you Smile

have a good read through what Tippia wrote, whilst I disagree with him on some things there is good advice in that post.

If you're in an area you like, keep flying in that area and pay attention to who is in Local with you. As you start noticing some groups more than others, add those corps and alliances to your standings so they stand out more in Local, and put a few of their CEO's and recruitment folk on your watchlist. As time goes on, you're going to start recognizing which groups are more active in the time you are, how far their range tends to be (regarding how far away from their "central" area they go), as well as what they fly (killboards are useful for this, as well).

At the same time, many of them are probably noticing you. Not actively, no, but passively, they're used to seeing your name in Local with them, and they start noticing what you fly, as well, simply because they see you when you're on the undock, or at a gate, or simply passing through on D-Scan.

Once you've identified a few groups who seem to have similar interests and active times as you, see if the have a public channel, and go in there. Chat with them, get to know them better. If they question you, just point out you've noticed them in the same areas that you fly, and were curious about them. As time goes on, as both sides have gotten to know each other better, see if you can start joining them in fleets (this will probably take a while, though some groups are quite willing to let you join fairly early-on).

If you find that both parties mesh well with each other, talk to them about potentially joining their corp. Conversely, if you find that that the two of you don't work out quite so well, you can walk away without any real loss, and yet have still gained a better understanding of them (as well, if things don't work out, the knowledge you gained flying with them may prove useful in the future should you encounter them in a fight :).

Getting yourself into a decent group isn't too difficult, it just takes time and patience. Better, though, to spend some time on it than to end up with a group you aren't so fond of and end up quitting because of it.

Welcome to EVE.
Since you're new, you might find the idea of a high sec perpetual war interesting.
It's a benchmark for yourself to get used to PvP mechanics while staying in high security space, and close to Jita for shopping needs. We are based 2 jumps from Jita.

Joining a low, null or wh corp at the beginning of your capsuleer life might be a little overwhelming. Being thrown into the deep end of things before you have grasped ideas of ship types, your strengths and weaknesses, could prove fatal to your enjoyment of our beloved game. Not to mention ISK costs of a costly mistake in low null or wh.

We aim to bridge this gap, with active fleets, and a smooth learning curve towards PvP.
Though we hate to part ways, we also believe that even if you learnt a single useful thing in PvP, our job here was done as you pursue your future career.
