Eye candy that's all. Waste of dev time and waste of a dev blog. Guess its a slow news day.

Move on, nothing to see here, its all rather dull.

Don't know about you, but I spend a surprising amount of time actually looking at the computer screen whilst playing the game.

Therefore, prettier is always better.

But that's not what it means. Sun is a proper noun, a name, referring to one specific star. It doesn't mean the star we're closest to (wherever we happen to be), it means the star that Earth is orbiting.

What you're suggesting is the equivalent of calling every planet that we colonize Earth, or calling every city we build New York.

If we were to colonize a planet around a named star, we wouldn't start calling it the Sun. It's not like the Sun is the only star that has a name. We have names for thousands of stars. And we can easily name even more stars if they become important enough to us.

What I'm suggesting is language evolves based upon usage. Were we to terraform and colonize mars, we would probably maintain such colloquialisms as "toiling in the earth" and referring to "dirt" as "earth." Rather than referring to martian dirt as "Mars" or what have you. That would not mean we're calling Mars, Earth, it would simply mean we're calling "dirt" "earth."

There would always be "that guy" walking around screaming about people referring to "Mars" as "earth" or what have you, but like in the previous hypothetical, some mysterious accident would eventually befall him.

Terms like "sun burn" and "sunlight" wouldn't change depending upon whatever solar system you're in, unless you're talking to "That Guy," who is mysteriously still alive, despite all his "accidents."

But hey, if you want to get really, really pedantic (and I have a hunch, that yes, you do) the term "earth" and "sun" predates our definitions of planets/stars. Therefore it wouldn't be completely outside the realm of possibility to adapt said terms to what they referred to originally. Sun = bright hot ball in sky, earth = thing you're standing on. Also earth's proper name is "Terra," our Star is "Sol," our moon is "Luna," but all these terms get used in contexts not specifically referring to their Proper Noun namesakes.

Yeah this is really cute and all but this is a dev blog aimed at us, not some masturbatory lore piece.

Enjoying the rain today? ;)

Holy **** this is so awesome, I have to post before I've even read it! O:

That ringing in your ears you're experiencing right now is the last gasping breathe of a dying inner ear as it got thoroughly PULVERISED by the point roaring over your head at supersonic speeds. - Tippia

Your entire post could have been condensed to "they're too lazy to use the right words, but we can make all sorts of excuses for that."

Hi,

These new "stellar" flares are really very bad and out of place!
They look nice on pictures but, hell, in game this is a whole other thing!

1st
Like others have already said, these are cinematic lens flares which don't look like anything "stellar" related.
Don't know about the lore, but I think we all want to forget the screen when we play and that being said, I personally don't want to see in-game content reflecting in it as if it was a real in-game camera.

2nd
These flares are really too bright and intrusive, and so making the 1st point even a lot more obviously ridiculous.
And so finally, these are really distracting and annoying and make the in-space screen sometimes barely unreadable.

You really can't let them go on the Tranquility server in that state.

The "suns" don't look like "suns" anymore, really.
They look more like giant light torches front of our faces cameras...

Please, think about considering our feedback.

Nolan Kotulan, a (new) player that found his first disapointment about the game.

P.S.: I was looking forward the god rays/casted shadows we saw on the Fanfest, where are them?

Trust me, according to the version of you that existed before Gaelic evolved into English, you're using pretty much every single sound wrong because you're too lazy to speak proper Gaelic.

Language evolves. Writing kinda stopped it for a bit. But once we stopped thinking of words (and knowledge in general) as divine gifts from God, the processes started up a bit.

The above was written and posted with nothing but love in my heart for all.

^This. An option to filter out bright spots (i.e. solar system star/sun and clouds/nebula/whatever) is needed. Think of this as a pair of sunglasses, like polarized lenses or similar.

You mean you guys don't wear shades while playing EVE!? Cool

I do, but with only one lens to block out the sun, clouds, and nebulae. I took the other lens out so I can still see my poorly lit spaceship. Pirate

These look great. However, when I warp to the sun, there's no noticeable difference in the lighting of the ship than when it's at the farthest planet from the sun. I'm talking about the side of the ship facing the sun. I assumed the light hitting the ship that close to the sun would be intense, but it looks the same.

For those worried about performance, my Radeon 5870 (1GB) is still doing fine on the test server, running two clients, one at 1920x1080, the other at 2560x1440. The new solar flares don't seem to have any additional impact on performance. The suns also seem to generally be smaller and less bright than they are on Tranquility. In some cases they could still stand to be toned down a tad further in my opinion, but I'm a weirdo and a fan of subtlety. Specifically, I'd lower the opacity on the part of the flare that reaches out to your ship in the shape of a hexagon or series of half circle thingies... and also the horizontal horizon-line part, towards the edges.

The sun with the uhhh.... butterfly wings... is a bit weird. I think it would look better with the wings being static instead of moving around with the camera. Either that or make the movement extremely subtle.

But all in all the new suns look good, art devs. I can't wait to see the planned bounced light from all the planets.

You are finally saying exactly the same I said. The "suns" themselves maybe are smaller, but the whole global effect is really too much intrusive and visible (and out of place, but if it was more subtle like you said, it could be more acceptable)...

Do EVE clones/pilots have glass optics in their eyes? (or whoever represent players' view in the game)

Because in "real life" I don't see any flares around sun - besides moments when I use viewfinder of my Nikon camera.

Sexy artwork.

But.

Can you please, please, PLEASE purdy pleasedy please give a graphics option to control the brightness of them?

For the love of all that is epic and EVEey, having them on screen gives me a headache. Without toning it down, they will continue to be nothing but that spot in the sky I do everything I can to avoid looking at. To say nothing about how many screenshots they've ruined.

edit: also, please?

I must say I love this sort of attention to graphical detail. I'm an amateur astronomer who began playing eve one night because I was rained out and couldn't use my scope. I sat down and began looking for a space sim that had nice graphics only to stumble upon an amazing mixture of astronomy, videogame & virtual reality that to this day lets me gaze on the heavens on those overcast nights.

Thanks so much for these wonderful graphical details. They truly are appreciated time & again.

I would also like a general lightening up of game graphics and a dimming of stars WH are kind of the only place that you can see your ship in space while not parked at the sun. and then god help you if you happen to turn the camera at the sun,

Art Department needs to play the game more. dark stuff is too dark , bright stuff is too bright. and as always give us an option to turn this **** off.

Its not possible to please all the people all the time, but it sure as hell is possible to Displease all the people, most of the time.

This.

Lens.
Flares.

Are much MUCH different than "solar flares".....not sure how someone associated with anything "spaceship" related could get the two confused.

It's the same people who design ships that don't have their thrust vectors in line with the center of mass. Cut them some slack, they never said they were going for scientifically accurate, did they? Blink
