Limitations of Probing

So I am aware of the limitations of using the scanner to track stuff down, but what about using scan/combat probes? I've never found anything that definitively says what they are.

I'm particularly interested in the max ranges of probes. I've read in some places it's 64 AU and in others that it's 56 AU. So if something is 80 AU away, and provided there isn't a natural location that a user can warp to get closer, it's logical then that nothing can scan/probe it down?

I'm also curious how sensor strength thwart scan attempts? For example if you had a 'yurt' mobile depot how much harder would it be to scan/probe down than the standard mobile depot?

Thank you for any and all comments.

Sweet name.Cool

If you look at the stats and it has a sensor strength greater than 0, it can be scanned.

Search Eve-Uni's wiki for more detailed information, it seems to be the most up to date as far as wikis go.

lol @ "out of probe range". Go use some probes and answer 90% of your own questions.

This, really. There is no max range of probes. You can scan anything anywhere in system.

As for how much harder... it's harder. I'm sure there are numbers. A proper scanning setup can find anything given a bit of time and some jiggling.

I've read there are range limitations on the process though. So there is at least some dorm of static limitation.

64 AU seems to be the max range of a combat probe, and from what I've gleaned this prove has the farthest reach.

So then my follow up question would be this:

If you have no idea that the thing you are looking for is 80+ AU away from you, and there isn't any other space entity that will allow you to position yourself closer, HOW can you probe down the thing 80 AU away? Because there wouldn't be anything that probes will detect that can position you closer.

Based on everything I've read, and the in game testing I've done, it should be impossible. (Of course I'll just mention right now, that there is a very likely possibility that I've overlooked something. It's hard to know what you don't know.)

Like others are saying, it doesn't seem like you have ever probed anything.

Here's the simple answer I can give:

- Your directional scanner is centered on your ship and has a max range of 14.3 AU (or thereabouts, someone can correct me).

- When you launch probes, you can move them around on the map out to pretty much any distance. Once you place them, the probes physically warp away from your location to where you told them to go. From that physical point, the max distance the probes can scan to is 64 AU if using Combat probes. This means that you can be 100AU away from a target, but still detect it if you move your probes close enough to its location.

Hope that helps!

You're probes aren't locked to your ship location. Once launched you can open the system map and move them wherever you want independently of where your ship is.

Thanks! Brigette and Last that was the piece I was missing. I've launched probes and had them find things, but the whole opening of the solar map eluded me.

If it helps I'm a master with the directional scanner.
