Just to address the US tax issue... They would access fair market value of the goods, virtual or not. Technically, even barter is taxable in the U.S. (Which is what this would probably be defined as, trading services for a virtual good.) It's just that unless the amount of goods being bartered is significant, they are quite unlikely to pay attention.

I think that the way this is currently happening is fine, btw.

Most writers expect something in return for doing all of the work (research, drafting, etc.) that goes into writing an article. Paying them RL cash makes things ridiculously complicated especially if any individual writer is being paid $600 or more in a year (Mittens would have to collect their names, addresses, SSNs and mail out 1099-MISC forms, because most of them are American) and even if a writer's payments were capped at $599 per year they'd all have to collaborate on a real name basis, which would make a lot of people uncomfortable.

ISK makes it easy and I'm pretty sure that it's already been discussed between TMC and CCP. IIRC, writers are only paid in ISK for articles related to CCP IP (EVE, Valkyrie, Dust/Legion, etc.)
