Your alt join FW, your main is safe, doing missions, mining what ever.
Your alt in logi reps your main during PvP.
Just two usages, that came into the mind of newbee without alt ;)

You will have to pay two subscriptions.

I am using Multiple Character Training to train up a PI alt. This, in combination with my main toon who has good PI, should be able to afford me a PLEX each month. In my third slot I have a character who sits in Jita and trades my goods so I can continue to do other things and check in on my sell orders every so often.

Other than that, FW gets you on the bad side of a lot of people so having an alt for that specific purpose can be useful.

If you're willing to drop another subscription/PLEX each month, having a second account lets you use two characters at once. A common use is hauling your ore back to station, so you can bring out a Covetor and mine for as long as you want without the downtime of dumping your ore.

1) PI for additional income
2) FW for additional income (so your main doesn't have to worry about the problem of being in a militia if you want to mine or run missions)
3) Train to haul your combat characters stuff around
4) Focus on another career path other than your main (mining, combat, trading, exploration)
5) Basic training and use for scouting
6) Placing the character as a cyno alt (though as a newbie you probably won't be worrying about this for a long while, if ever)
7) Awoxing fun
8) Attempt to infiltrate a corp and steal everything
9) Train for links/boosts for your other character

The list goes on and on.

A bit of an open ended question. If by alt you mean a second-account alt to supplement a PVP 'main'...but as mentioned above...

Exploration to feed your main ISKies

Scouting/Probing/boosting to keep your main alive.

Awoxing for both lolz and ISK, keeping your main clear of the taint of said sins.

Ganking, who you don't mind going -10 while your main stays clean as a whistle.

...and the countless other uses...PI for ISK, mining/industry for ISK and to build your own ships, carrier pilot to taxi your main's **** around the universe, etc etc etc etc etc etc. (Or the inverse, a PVP/gank alt to supplement a PVE/indy/trading main...)

Point is, if you plan to stay in the game longer than six months to a year you are going to need one, and its a question of when you get one, not if. In fact the dirty little secret of EvE IMHO is a minimum of two accounts is needed to be effective at a lot of things.

IMHO.

If you don't know what to do with an alt, you don't need one!

I have 5 accounts:

Alt #1 = My shadow goes wherever I do. His purpose in life is to make mine easier, which includes training skills I don't have time for. Primarily a booster alt (maxed: Orca, Rorqual, all Command Ships), and secondarily a drone-boat pilot, tertiary carrier pilot (all races). He started-off hauling, salvaging, and assisting with exploration (hacking & archeology). Also a blops pilot. Currently working on all reprocessing skills to 5. He started life about 40 days after I did.

Alt #2 = Research, manufacturing & trade, POS Manager. Also ice and scrap reprocessor. His purpose is to earn me ISK. As he stays in hisec, he also is mission-capable.

Alt #2.5 = Research & manufacturing, only. (Second character on same account, partially dual-trained, 12.77m SP = about 6 months).

Alt #3 = General assist. Started as a miner-only character, but has gone way beyond that (e.g. HIC, Tengu, drone-boat pilot, covert cyno).

Alt #4 = Alt training account. Currently has a 62.7m SP Science & Industry char that I plan to transfer to my main account someday. Currently finishing-off all Science skills to 5.

Alt #4.5 = Booster alt (somewhat like my shadow, but more leadership focused & has FC 4, but much fewer SP) a friend that left EVE transferred to me. Don't know what I will do with it yet.

All of them can do PI, research, and manufacturing. All are POS gunners. Most are Logistics pilots (can pilot Basilisk & Guardian, though some do more), and freighter pilots. Most are jump freighter pilots.

The above doesn't include cyno alts and market price-check alts that are on the same accounts.

Thanks to all for the responses. I might go for an alt.

A "technical" question - do you run them via the "select a character" screen where there are 3 choices or do you open a second EVE session? Does it make any difference?

Can I benefit from setting up an alt eg perks from the Buddy scheme?

Sorry to be so ignorant.

No need to apologize Smile

Only one character per account can be logged in at one time. So if you wanted two characters in space, you would need to sub two accounts. However, if you wanted another character to do things when your main isn't logged in, you could keep it on one account and switch back and forth when necessary. Additionally, only one character per account can be trained at a time, unless you use a PLEX to activate multiple character training from month to month.

Why would you run missions or mine if you're in FW? You make much more money in FW, seems like kind of an odd idea.
