I like having a pretty face to look at while playing. RL guy here though.

I think psychologically speaking, avatars are a reflection of:

1. what we want/desire to have.

or

2. what we want/desire to become.

I had to many male chars..it was becoming somekind of in game sausage fest so I thought "**** it". Was also out of male names.

I choose whatever race/gender because of appearances. If I play a game for 100s of hours, I want the gear to look pleasing to the eye. Gender has nothing to do with this, really. Just aesthetics and gear/clothing design of the game.

I have female alts mainly to have a kind of "Charlie's Angels" thing going.

They always need ISK. Nothing really changes.

Ironically this is the only game I actually play a dude in.

Someone said our role playing characters are a reflection of what we desire to have or become. I just realized I want to have or become a female bipedal sentient cow who is sometimes a bear sometimes a cat sometimes a narwhal sometimes a reindeer and sometimes a tree.....sounds about right.

I'm RL female, but I really like the fact that in EVE it doesn't matter a whole lot (at least in my experience). Whoever I am at the end of the day, I'm expected to learn to be a better pilot and pull my own weight. It makes EVE seem like the new frontier, and my RL job seem like stuck in the dark ages.

I made Sibs because I didn't identify with my first pilot (a super tough Minnie fighter pilot) and wanted to try out more of the engineering and science part of the game which is closer to what I do in my spare time. There is some fantasy involved of course, I get to have blue hair that I could never have for my RL job and a Bat'leth shaped tattoo across half my face.

I personally *like* the fact that in EVE (this game I like so much) the guys get to try out the role of being a girl. For some EVE players (like DK) it's just a pretty face with nothing else in common. For some other players it's a deeper connection, with some suspension of RL personality for the sake of playing a role or experiencing a different side of themselves. I think that all of these reasons are valid, and if it teaches you something about yourself then it's valuable. It's not to say that EVE avatars should teach us anything about the opposite gender, or that they should be modeled on reality (or that we should aim to carry any moral lessons out of an EVE persona).

My third pilot was a fellow I spent a lot of time on during character creation.. he was modeled exactly like Benedict Cumberbatch and I called him "Sherlock Khan". It was a really weird experience because as I would chat, I would hear the words in my head in his deep bass British accent. And sometimes if somebody asks a really stupid question on Help chat, I'd imagine Sherlock Khan (and his lovely cheekbones) just grimacing, like he might on the TV show. Anyway, it was too many pilots for me and I biomassed him, and lost were any lessons in being a guy I could learn through him..

This behavior clearly needs its own topic. For the hundredth time.
