I like Bill & Ted too ;) Just a matter of taste I suppose. I still shamefully fancy Kevin Costner, Mr Brooks just made it worse. Never living it down.

Another terrible one: War of the Worlds (2005). I remember watching it and thinking. Eh? And really love that LP.

I get that prickly feeling too with some of the Shyamalan films, but I suspect I'm just missing the subtext. It's like being taunted somehow.

Love the soundtrack. John Barry was a great composer. Also, my Orca is named after the Cygnus first name, Centaurus.

I haven't seen very many sci-fi films and remember even less probably. I did see event horizon and did think it was creepy and entertaining. I just recently watched Sunshine and thought the effects and cinematography were beautiful (not to mention the score) though the movie itself was ok I guess.

That's on one hand. On the other I've read a lot of praise for 2001 in the thread and that is one I have seen. Easily one of the most boring things I've ever been forced to endure. Endless camera panning across white walls. Annoying computer voice. Dialog I just could not get into. Oppressive. Flat. Sequences that seemed to just never end. Even the effin furniture annoyed me. lol. I realize its a classic but so is Ben-Hur and that movie can eff off too. =)

I kinda liked event horizon as well.
And Bill & Ted.

And, though from experience many will disagree (and already have here), I kinda liked War of the Worlds. At least the first two thirds of the movie.
At least in the cinema, with the sound design, I could really "feel" the oppressive desperation of mankind. It just came across very atmospheric and immersive to me.

I couldn't name a worst sci-fi movie, though :/ I probably forgot the ones I liked least.

I remember one film that is so old i actually seen it as a child, and its 1936 film of HG Wells and it's called Things to Come. Honorable mention at least for predicting WW2. I am not as old as this film, we had old films in the television repeated for those strange geeks called "intelectuals". My father liked them very much, and i remembered this film whole my life from the moment I have seen it, just like the Space Odyssey and Star Wars.

To be clear, I'm talking about the genre, not the channel.

BEST: 2001 A Space Odyssey. Do I really need to qualify this decision?

WORST: Spaceballs. Not just because it's a weak and groan-inducingly painful riff on Star Wars, but because it's a depressing example of Mel Brooks post-greatness which can't hold a candle to his superior spoofs like Young Frankenstein (candle? gettit? someone?) and Blazing Saddles.

How 'bout you?

2001 is unarguably the finest SciFi movie ever made. 46 years later, it remains the gold standard of how you craft a film. It defines the term 'quality' IMHO

Worst: there is a little gem featured on MST3K titled : "Space Mutiny" (1988)

That movie suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucked.

As for best: too many to list, but "2001" is up there.

I thought "The Empire Strikes Back" aka Star Wars Ep V, was pretty good.

Also, "Signs" (2002)

I'm going to get hate mail for this, but Dune was awful..just awful. The Sci-Fi channel remake was better, but still not that great...but that original one.. pretty sure it gave people cancer.

Best is a tie between Blade Runner and Spaceballs.

Since the cessation of their usefulness is imminent, may I appropriate your belongings?

I just remembered a bad one!

Mission Stardust

As a fan of the perry rhodan universe (though I haven't read any of it for years xD) I'm kinda torn. It's sooooo bad.. really really bad.
It's still kinda awesome, though xD

I'm usually very alone with that latter opinion.

This forum should have a poll so we could vote for greatest sci fi film

Top 3 IMO

2001
Brazil
Bladerunner

After that it gets fuzzy because there are a lot of good ones. You could throw in things like Star Wars, and of course Metropolis has to be up there.

Oh yeah if you like cheesy B-movie sci fi that is actually good, check out Spacehunter.

Gosh there are a lot of bad ones though. Lost In Space, all these dumb superhero movies they keep coming out with, of course like Thor and stuff like that can be entertaining, but most of the time they suck. Those crappy Blade movies. Van Helsing. I still can't believe they remade Planet of the Apes.

I still stand by my pick for worst sci fi movie as Attack of the Clones. Such a huge budget, there is just no excuse for that crap.

I really can't name just one movie, because most Sci-Fi tend to explore specific elements.

But my favourites, and this is by no means a full list:

Predator (it was just cool how well realised the predator and the tension was)
The Day the Earth Stood Still, of course
Contact (inspirational, more cerebral than most, love it, watch it every year)
Matrix (watched the first one, after nervously staying away from any information pre release: mind was blown, completely)
Alien Saga (they all have their moments, even 4! Prometheus was very badly written, but the premise still feels very cool)
District 9/Elysium (Blomkamp infuses Sci Fi with a badly needed non American view and more mechanical Sci Fi which I love, blending new tech with broken down stuff)
Akira (wonderful, alien, thought provoking)
Event Horizon (space horror yay!)
Ghost in the Shell (gorgeous, wieghty japanese cultural implications and lovingly realised tech)
The Second Renaissance (in itself practically better than the matrix)
Fifth Element (perfectly realised Sci Fi comedy)
Vanilla Sky (lovely tale of human faults and emotion)
Deep Impact (shoot me, I loved it. More of a disaster movie though)
Europa Report was cool also!

And of course: Star Trek and Star Wars. We are all indebted to those. Also, Tom Cruise does some pretty decent Sci Fi: oblivion, minority report (near future tech, like)

As for worst: 2012, AvP, Battlefield Earth, Armageddon, any Sci Fi with Will Smith in it

Will smith in "I am legend" was pretty good. But that's about it for his resume.

Surprising that nobody has mentioned "The Matrix" (1999)

(oops...found it in someone's list. But still.)

Everyones guilty pleasure, Pacific Rim.

Gravity, a great film.

Honourable mention for war of the worlds (1953). A film that even after 61 years still manages to not look all that dated.

signs? lol

while it had some great parts in it ("I AM INSANE WITH ANGER! TIME FOR AN ASS KICKING!" ...lol love that line)...the whole idea of the movie was 'tarded.

aliens that are allergic to water come to conquer earth...a planet which is so abundant in water that it actually comprises a significant part of the atmosphere in the form of humidity. intending to defeat humanity using melee/hand to hand battle techniques. human beings...that are like 60% water themselves.

Apart from the obvious classics (2001, Bladerunner, etc), I also quite enjoyed:
- Twelve Monkeys
- Wall-E
- The Terminator
- Total Recall (another Arnold movie, what is wrong with me?)

I severely disliked:
- Armageddon
- Independence Day
- The Core
- Starship Troopers
