Great post Erica!

While I too wasn't exactly overwhelmed by the specific new pieces they're introducing, I WAS excited that they are adding new content.

As for them not currently not working on WiS, while disappointing, I can understand and appreciate this while they just retired one project and are working on getting two new projects off the ground. But they can only sell so many shirts without providing more meaningful ways of showing them off to your friends. Cool

I do however, fear that the reality is, that in order to implement WiS, may mean the retirement of Carbon. It is a rather demanding engine with a lot of lower end systems being simply incapable of rendering multiple avatars without burning to the ground, That being said, They DID have working multiple avatar working in WoD, So I would assume the tech exists?

I completely agree that it's a natural evolution of the EVE Universe, all I can do is hope it's time in the spotlight comes sooner rather than later.

Yeah, the Carbon Engine and it's issues ... this is something I discussed briefly with Webvan the other day actually (he's actually a nice guy once you get him out of GD P). He had some good points regarding it, and I agreed with him when he said that it would probably be very impractical to "remove" the carbon engine. I'm betting it'll stay - but - whether or not it's the basis of avatar gameplay content in the future, beyond character creation, is another matter. Perhaps a seperate engine will be used?

In anycase I think it's only a matter of time before the average user's PC technology catches up with Carbon's demands. So really what would overheat a graphics card two years ago probably won't overheat the graphics cards of tomorrow. So who knows. Things change! Smile

Unfortunately my opinion is and will be colored by the interactions that I personally have with him/her/them. If they continue to be disruptive, then my opinion will continue to be that they are disruptive.

This is pretty much where my current speculation stands also.

This is what I'm hoping will happen though! Smile

Look I would like to see this implemented as much as anyone else, but what is thread #25447566 going to accomplish that the other ones couldn't?

I don't think we're trying to "accomplish" anything.

We just want to discuss an existing part of EVE that interests us.

This thread already has accomplished it's goal and will continue doing so. The goal is to have a place to talk about avatar based gameplay. We're doing it right now! Smile

I'm all for avatar gameplay!
I do support the initiative for a mature discussion about all its aspects, hopes, problems, etc...

For avatar gameplay to be succesful is should also be relevant to the game as a whole. It should be able to have inpact on the industry or the economy of EVE. It should reflect the harsh environment that is the EVE universe.

It should also be structured so it doesn't burn the servers to crisps whenever a lot of people are in the system.

The route CCP has chosen with Legion is interesting from that point of view. It has potential because it shows they have learned from the CQ debacle. If you want avatar gameplay to be great, it should be its own game, with its own engine but still heavily tied to the EVE universe.

This brings up some interesting points on industry and the EVE Universe. EVE already has a well established economy and industry system, and it's getting a massive overhaul. I don't think the new games [necessarily] need in built industry to begin with, however, I do agree with them needing to be able to impact both the economy and industry in some way. One method might be unrestricted item trading across all games. I see no reason that an EVE pilot can't own a bunch of Valkyrie fighters for the purpose of selling them, Or that a Legionnaire can't invest in some destroyers in the hopes of contracting them to people so they can provide orbital support. Another way might be the harvesting of resources that are traded to eve players who then manufacture goods for the games and trade them back. There are some issues with this concept though, one of the major ones being, IT'S VERY IMPORTANT THAT ANY CCP PRODUCT CAN SURVIVE ON IT'S OWN WITHOUT ANY OTHER GAMES. This is to ensure that the fate of all CCP games isn't directly tied to ALL games. I don't enjoy the thought that CCP might/may/will/has made products that aren't hugely successful, But it's far more important to plan ahead than to try and play catch up.

I really think that EVE: Legion is the best candidate for Avatar's in Stations currently. But I also agree that it would need a not insignificant amount of content dedicated to the game play for it to be worthwhile. Being that Legion isn't eve greenlit yet, It would likely be a while before any resources were devoted to developing it. Ugh

Stop creating multiple threads on the same topic.

There are plenty of threads out there already discussing WiS. Please use this thread if you'd like to continue discussion.
