Please use this thread to discuss Avatar based gameplay and your interest in it.

Posting your opposition to Avatar based gameplay will be off topic as that's not the topic of this thread.

If you don't like/want/fear/hate WiS and/or Avatar based gameplay, I would suggest you simply ignore this thread.

###########################################################################################

I personally am not much of an MMO player, but EVE has always held a special place in my heart for it's uniqueness. I have on numerous occasions carried multiple accounts and participated in a wide array of gameplay within EVE.

From the very first day, I found the lack of an avatar separated me from the immersion a little bit, I was effectively, just a big hunk of metal flying through space, I didn't feel very connected to the gameplay. There is nothing wrong with this as a game model, and this isn't intended to criticize EVE in any way. When I first heard the news that we were going to be getting Avatar based gameplay, I found a renewed interest in EVE and I was very excited for it as I patiently waited for years and years while CCP Misguidedly neglected their internet spaceships game while working on Ambulation.

Let me be very clear, I do NOT advocate CCP neglecting internet spaceships to make WiS gameplay. I do however, recognize that companies are capable of working on multiple projects at the same time. With the announcement of the One avatar for all games concept, this brings about the right time to bring WiS back as the bridge that connects all three games in a common social environment. CCP has talked a lot about increasing the social aspect of EVE and this is one of the many ways this could be done.

Personally, I think that WiS is best suited as it's own standalone project tied in with the EVE universe or as part of EVE: Legion.

I know there are a lot of pilots that would thoroughly embrace avatar gameplay, but more importantly, there is a very large demographic out there that would come to EVE to check out the Avatar gameplay that otherwise wouldn't touch EVE due to the spreadsheets in space stigma.

That's a simple one to answer. Because there are people that like it, there are people that want it, and there are people that want to discuss it. These are the reasons they keep coming up. If the interest didn't exist, there wouldn't be WiS threads.

Thank you OP.

As a subscriber of 8+ accounts and a regular contributor to both ingame and forum content I believe I pay my EVE taxes and support this thread and/or initiative.

I'm a WiS/Captains Quarters/New Eden Store/Character creator and avatar gameplay supporter and appreciate a place in this subforum in which to discuss the topic among other like-minded tax payers of New Eden who also support further development of what is essentially an existing feature, and not a new proposal.

I look forward to enjoying positive discussion in this thread and am confident the lovely ISDs will work to ensure this topic not only stays open but remains on topic through intelligent, unbiased, proactive and transparent forum moderation.

Why would you want to post in a thread about WiS when you don't care about WiS?

Despite everyone's need to kick over other peoples sandcastles, There are people like myself, that do look forward to a day where we can get out of our pods. The same way not everyone wants to play in null sec, or not everyone wants to do PvP, Not everyone wants WiS. All of these things can exist without everyone wanting them.

I care because I'd rather see CCP focus on gameplay content, with stuff out in space rather than walking around a station as though it were play station home.

Back when i started playing EVE (early 2009) i thought "WiS" was already a part of it. Imagine my disapointment when all i was, was a pod or ship Blink

But EvE was good even without WiS so it was not a "dealbraker" for me.
Then they announced that WiS was coming, showing us trailers and teasers... needless to say, my thong was moist for weeks and months until they released it...the CQ.... Sad
Was not sure if we should cry or laugh at that point.. i chose to laugh (but deep inside a part of me died that patch-day).

Then they started working on WoD... and i almost felt a violent rage inside me. They could not finnish what they have promised since...i dunno...2005 or sum.. But they could make another game involving character-play?
Needless to say... i laughed my ass off in pure spite when that got cancelled LolLol

I still hope they will make WiS in eve.. but frankly i dont care that much anymore. I kinda lost faith in CCP and their shallow, empty "soon tm" promises.
There are other games coming that will cater this need for me, and then my pods and ships can just be a distant memory of a game that REALLY could have been the best space-mmo ever..

We're not here to suggest WiS. We're here to discuss our interest in it in a general sense. To put it in F&I wouldn't be the appropriate place for it.

Sorry to hear you're so ready to leave EVE. I understand your perspective and I can relate to most of it.Hearing CCP Pockethulhu say "We know there's a powerful idea here, we haven't forgotten about it yet" (In regards to the "door" at EVE: Vegas 2013) Gives me hope that CCP truly does see the potential for the gameplay model. They'd be foolish not to. I just hope we get to a place where they feel it's a good product to develop again.

I know the Future Space Sci-Fi genre will be getting some tough competitors. While not direct competition to EVE, They will appeal to a good majority of common demographics that EVE does. Perhaps this is part of the motivation for the existing restructuring currently happening in CCP to "Circle the wagons" and bring everything back to PC with ports to other platforms as a secondary focus. I hope this may also be the fire under their ***es needed to get them to re-evaluate a product focused on a more casual social gaming experience.

You should probably also head over to the Valkyrie and Legion forums and tell CCP to stop working on those too. Companies work on multiple projects. It's a simple fact of reality. It's not going to change. Working on WiS doesn't inherently mean internet spaceships will get ignored or neglected like they were last time. CCP learned their hard lesson over their last delve into WiS.

To fail and not try again, makes the failure a complete waste.

To learn from your failure and put that wisdom to use, can turn a waste into something valuable.

The failure of Ambulation wasn't Ambulation itself, it was the cost of of creating it. In this case, Internet spaceship neglect. CCP has since moved towards multiple products to diversify into rather than trying to cram everything into EVE because as you've stated, Internet spaceships are important to people. In that same vein, there are MORE people that prefer other genres, than prefer any single genre. In this case, EVE vs NON-EVE games. If CCP were to do nothing but market to the EVE demographic, they would cause stagnating growth because at some point they'd reach their saturation point with no where else to go. By diversifying their products they create opportunities for conversions from one genre to another. Someone that wouldn't ever try EVE, will now try EVE because they love Legion so much!

Because walking around a station is a little bit more entertaining than spinning a ship in the hangar for hours on end while camped in a station?

I support WiS because I look forward to more ways of interacting with other capsuleers, ways of exchanging goods that aren't reduced to looking at lists of numbers on a commodity market, and places to show off the expensive purchases we've made such as new shoes and pants.

This is a discussion thread. You can't just say "the other side of this discussion is not allowed", that's not how it works. If you want to be able to do that, go make your own forum somewhere.

WiS is a pointless waste of developer time that will effectively add a first/third person minigame to EVE. I'd rather they focus on content that is relevant to the game.

Your agrument would be valid if the topic were "CCP should/shouldn't make WiS" or something to that effect.

Being that the topic is "I/WE have an interest in this thing." Makes opposition off topic. There is no way for you to oppose that we do have an interest in it.

This has been gone over several times, but for your benefit I'll go over it again.

As for you rather having EVE dev's work on EVE, This is still possible while WiS dev's work on WiS. No one is suggesting that work be taken away from Internet spaceships, nor would CCP ever neglect internet spaceships again the way they did before.

As for being "A pointless waste of developer time" I highly doubt you've done the requisite market research to be qualified to state this as anything more than a baseless opinion of yours.

Ok...so WiS and it's related discussion points! Big smile

Here's my 2c $19 USD worth.

WiS right now, as some people enjoy pointing out, is in fact dead as a development project. This is very true, and was even confirmed to me personally by a Dev who I spoke to via messages just a few days ago. There are currently no plans to continue development of WiS, and this is why you don't really hear CCP talking about the topic much.

So, where does that leave us? Well it leaves us with no WiS right now, but in the long term? Who knows, but personally I believe development of avatar based immersion in EVE is part of it's natural evolution and will eventually become a development priority once again. But still today avatar gameplay in EVE extends much, much further than the individual topic of WiS itself as a project. We have the Captain's Quarters already implemented, we have the new Character Creator utilizing the carbon engine. We have the NeX store (Soon to become the New Eden Store) where we can purchase already existing accesories for our avatars. Not only that, but while nobody is actually working on the literal WiS concept, there are still people (Art team for one) who are working on avatar accesories.

So it is a relevant EVE related topic regarding something that legitimately exists right now ingame and is subject to some development.

Who caught the Art Team presentation during Fanfest? Smile

Who noticed the new outfits that are coming? Big smile

Who noticed the new cybernetics that are coming? Big smile

It's pretty exciting, here's some screenshots taken from the video of the presentation:

Outfits

Cybernetics 1

Cybernetics 2

Personally while I'm not that impressed with the new outfit styles I'm still excited to purchase them when available and try out combinations in the character creator. Cybernetics have never been my thing, I always thought the arms looked silly and didn't really "fit" due to the light colour tones used with them. However I find these new darker augmentations very attractive!

Members of the art team stated that these new additions were essentially just implementations of existing stuff that hadn't yet been implemented and have now just been touched up a little and are ready to go.

I'd be really excited to see them derive some fresh items too though, and I'm sure the 3D artists at CCP would relish such a chance to unleash their wonderful creativity. Blink

So, while I won't sit here and stamp my feet and "demand WiS" I will certainly try to encourage the art team to continue the effort they're making with avatar items. Personally I'd really love to see ....

  • Racial clothing and hairstyles opened up to all races
  • Some new hairstyles for both genders
  • Leg tattoos for both genders
  • A wider variety of bottom-layer clothing (especially shorter skirts/shorts so avatars of both gender can show off legs and subsequently leg tattoos)
  • Hats or head-gear (not really my thing, but a lot of people keep mentioning this *COUGH Webvan COUGH*
  • A wider variety of footwear for both genders

That's just to name a few. Some other things like gloves (fingerless) would be pretty cool, and if we really want to go "out there" maybe even asthetic items such as hip/thigh holstered weapons.

As for the character creator itself I think it's beautiful. I love the Carbon Engine, although it is sad that is has some major problems and is so demanding on the average user's PC. There isn't much I'd like to see changed here, although I do find the pose selection to be quite awkward, not helped by the selection of lighting options - most of which seem dark and shadow-heavy. So, a few more 'casual' poses and a couple more selections of brighter lighting options would be really cool.
