CCP once fielded a question to the CSM, asking them why most players do not get involved in the forums or the community much at all.

This is a great example of why most players who come on the forums to discuss an idea or ask a question never return after their first time or second time. In the larger picture incidents like this are what cause players to keep to themselves and their cliques instead of getting involved with the community much past that.

There needs to be harsher penalties for this kind of trolling and disrespectful behavior, it contributes to much of the isolationist attitudes in the game which ultimately lead to lost subscriptions and $$$ over time.

What happened in that thread was not discussion, it was not criticism, it was not even innocent trolling. What happened in that thread was a group of angry men getting their rocks off at another person's expense.

So, you link a thread in which someone took heat for admitting he is attempting to abuse the petition system, and you think it's supposed to be an example of bad behavior on the part of the forums?

Maybe from the OP you're linking, if that's what you meant. That kind of fascist crap isn't acceptable, and I for one refuse to treat someone who peddles that kind of nonsense with respect.

I guess that does make sense though, if people who post things like that don't post afterward. And that's a good thing.

The problem that everyone seems to be deliberately missing is this: The knee jerk "tough-guy" solution given by EvE's troll army is for the person in question to follow a course of action that ultimately just turns said person into another annoying troll themselves.

This is like telling a kid who is bullied at school to work out and train kung-fu until they can beat up the bullies. Sounds great until you realize that all you've really done is transferred the title of "biggest bully" from the original jerk over to a new freshly minted jerk, rather than actually ending the bullying issue itself.

In other words, the "HTFU" answer is just another way of saying "escalate the problem even further." And so this escalation continues until you've created people like Erotica1 and only then does CCP intervene - and by that point, as said example proves to anyone who's been following that particular drama festival - it now far, far too late to bring any sort of sensible solution to the table, and that's true regardless of who's side you may want to take on the matter.

So yes, I agree with OP that CCP does far too little to "nip it in the bud" and because of this many new people look at forums, realize that it's mostly just a festival of monkeys flinging poo & waving their dongs around and then, quite logically, say to themselves "If this is what 'community involvement' is all about then I'll pass, thanks."

I know that if I was shopping for a daycare center and I walked in and saw screaming kids lighting each others' hair on fire while the teachers were dozing off in the corner I'd turn right back around and never come back. No amount of reassurance that "We'd step in if it ever got really out of hand" would make me change my mind, either. That's the EvE forums and I don't blame anyone for not wanting anything to do with it.

Sadly, the community "police" here only seem to want to move in when either:
A) Things have already gone too far and the damage is already done.
B) Something offended them personally, actual forum rules be damned.

Ironically, this basically means that they are just like CONCORD: They don't prevent, only punish. Well that's fine for in-game combat, but that's sure as heck not a smart way to run your entire community. Can you imagine if real life cops acted like that?

"911: What's you emergency?"
"There's a rapist invading my home, send help!"
"Sorry, we can't do that until he's actually in your home and already raping you. Then we'll send some cops over."

That's CONCORD in a nutshell. That's also how you don't police a community in a nutshell, too. You want people to move into your neighborhood? You want your real estate prices to stay good? Then you provide a safe environment for new residents. Because right now the EvE community is basically crack-town so don't be surprised when people don't want to be a part of it.

In regards to trolling and being trolled, you're right that it's the reality of internet forums, but from what I've experienced the trolling on the EvE-O forums is of a much higher quality than others. It might seem strange to be complimenting trolls, but I think that they truly deserve it in comparison to other trolls. There isn't much of the normal trolling garbage that you see elsewhere, with 50 posts just saying "u mad bro?" or containing just a link to a pic that says "TROLOLOLOLOLO". Instead, trolls here take a few moments to think about what they're going to say, they often spell check and only when they are satisfied do they attempt to make you feel bad. It's just further evidence of the fact that EvE Online attracts a higher caliber of gamers.

LMAO, this is the perfect moment for an "I told you so!" Here is an example of somebody that saw an opportunity, was actually able to recognize it as an opportunity and then took advantage of it. Other forums would have never had this happen, instead it would of been a deluge of posts with as little as a single word in them, all without a bit of relevance to the topic at hand. EvE Online: The game that brought trolling out of the dank recesses of the internet and elevated it to an art form.

Yeah, like the game the forums can be harsh and hostile. When I first started posting here I automatically took a fresh pic of my **** and posted them first thing before anyone even had time to tell me to GTFO. I just wanted to get that part out of the way quick as possible so I could begin trolling and having fun like everyone else.

First, the OP uses a link to a rightfully closed thread as part of his statement.
Second, this topic is a bit to close to discussing forum moderation for my taste.

Keep in mind the CCL team can not ban people from the forum.
We can however (and often do) point out posters/posts/threads to CCP, who will then review and decide if a warning or ban is warranted.
Having discussions about it on the forum however, is not allowed. But I suspect most posters in this thread knew that quite well already...Cool

Thread locked.

The Rules:
10. Discussion of warnings and bans is prohibited.

Such matters shall remain private between CCP and the involved user. Questions or comments concerning warnings and bans will be conveyed through email or private messaging. CCP respect the right of our players to privacy and as such you are not permitted to publicize private correspondence (including petition responses and emails) received from any of the aforementioned parties.

11. Discussion of forum moderation is prohibited.

The discussion of EVE Online forum moderation actions generally leads to flaming, trolling and baiting of our ISD CCL moderators. As such, this type of discussion is strictly prohibited under the forum rules. 25. Re-opening locked topics is prohibited.
