EVE: Apocalypse

This stuff usually goes on blogs. Fortunately I don't run a blog and the internet is spared a hurricane of bad jokes and even worse writing that my keyboard could produce. For those wondering if I'm about to spawn the umpteenth "EVE is dying!" - I'll leave that to the pros, people are way better at it than I'll ever be.

Let's put on our tinfoil hats for a moment. Let's talk about little things, little nuances CCP likes to put into things. Let us first fire up your favorite internet .flv clip provider and look for the newest trailer: Prophecy.

(Was an epic trailer by the way).

It begins with words "From the formless void, there springs an entity; more primordial than the elements themselves. In its wake it will follow a storm." - now, those are your average doomsaying words. We prophesize ourselves the birth of something we can't fully comprehend, that will unleash horrible things unto people. Insert your favorite calamity here, warnings of indigenous people and herb-smoking shamans there and bam: apocalypse o'clock. As generic as it gets.

Well, the only difference is, all that time I thought that those words seemed familiar. Then, I was arguing with someone (over the internet, naturally) about the bonuses Titans provide and decided to check what's the passive boost provided by each. Doing so, I saw the description of the Erebus titan:

"From the formless void's gaping maw, there springs an entity. Not an entity such as any you can conceive of, nor I; an entity more primordial than the elements themselves, yet constantly coming into existence even as it is destroyed. It is the Child of Chaos, the Pathway to the Next.

The darkness shall swallow the land, and in its wake there will follow a storm, as the appetite of nothing expands over the world.

From the formless void's gaping maw, there springs an entity."

Those words were attributed, as far as the description goes, to "Dr. Damella Macaper" and are part of "The Seven Events of the Apocalypse".

Initially, I thought "huh, nice link" and forgot about it. Then it kind of hit me - hang on, it's CCP. They made a big deal about the names of the Stratios and Astero a while back so let's google the name.

To my surprise, yup - there's an EVE Wiki link to a rather normal-looking profile of a prophet. Surprisingly not Amarr, went off the rails like most prophets do and boom, wrote the mentioned "Seven Events of the Apocalypse". It even has an attached chronicle, which can be found here.

Interesting things from the chronicle are that out of the seven events, three (minor) have already happened in the lore. Four that remain are:

- "The apetite of nothing expands over the world"
- "The little brother makes the final sorrowful steps home; he is not welcome"
- "What was many now, becomes one when one becomes four"
- "Return of the dark light from the heart of the mother"

This is where linking facts ends for me - I can only tinfoil a loose interpretation, and it's not exactly the best quality tinfoil either.

The first one:

In the recent expansions, there's been a recurring theme: the capsuleers of New Eden are slowly gaining more and more independence. It's small steps for now, but we're yet to see the reasons for changes coming in Kronos (beyond Inferno that explains teams). It could be seen as the "expanding apetite" as we, the players, claim more and more.

"nothing" kind of doesn't fit here, of course so this might be a completely bullshit interpretation.

The second one:

Oh hell if I know, too many of those around. The return of Sansha Kuvakei? Something with Sleepers? Capsuleers trying to, for whatever reason make buddies with the empires? Minmatar Republic deciding slavery was actually a neat idea?

The third one:

Again, it could refer to a few things. "Many becomes one" kind of obviously refers to unity among... some people. "When one becomes four" could refer to either the complete fall of empires (which is already halfway done, they're split two-two due to war unless I'm wrong) or - the fall of CONCORD Assembly. CONCORD Assembly is composed out of four divisions after all.

The fourth:

Someone's bound to have a good idea about that one.

So, anyway, by the looks of it we'll have the honour of bringing upon the citizens of New Eden an apocalypse. Will we do so with Apocalypses? Time will tell, but it'd speak well of CCP's humour if they waited for meta to shift to apocs just before. And introduced ship painting, because if I'm bringing apocalypse in an Apocalypse, I want it custom-painted.

(Alternatively, Armageddons can be used in the case of an armageddon. It depends on preference, I guess - I, for one, prefer how the Apocalypse looks.)

Well, here's a fair portion of tinfoil for you fine gentlemen of EVE-O General Discussion. I'm certain all mistakes will be suitably examined and used to fuel the flames that will head my way, and if I, by any chance, shared it with the wrong crowd - Doc Fury will point me in the right direction.

Wasn't there already a thread about this? I mean it's interesting stuff but I could have sworn there was an ongoing discussion.

I actually don't know, I know there was one concerning the Stratios/Astero names and links to W-space lore. Didn't see one around so thought I might as well - then again, if it was around GD it probably was swept away by rivers of tears.

Quote:
"The apetite of nothing expands over the world"

I interpret this as the rogue drones spreading all over the place. Being machines and considered without soul or live, they could be classified as a "nothing" with its own motivation.
Quote:
"The little brother makes the final sorrowful steps home; he is not welcome"

Might be the Jove contacting the Sleepers asking for help with their disease and getting brushed off/blown up, which results in them recalling any and all people from empire, I.E. SoCT and CONCORD Diplomats and vacating their stations in the empires.
Quote:
"What was many now, becomes one when one becomes four"

Again Rogue Drones, this time uniting all the hives under one emergent intelligence, maybe connected to the Sleepers with the Virtual AI moving to a new host away from the Sleeper mainframes. And the one becomes four could be the breaking up of CONCORD, now without Jove to reinforce unity and authority, meaning the Empires lose further grasp on Capsuleers.
Quote:
"Return of the dark light from the heart of the mother"

Probably has something to do with the gate in Prophecy, might be another eruption from the EVE gate wrecking havoc on the cluster and/or stuff uncloaking with the Jove no longer around to maintain things or the Sleeper AI with the drones trying to rebuild the EVE Gate to go back to Earth, inviting disaster when the activation fails/gets interrupted. This may also open up new technology for future long distance gates for players to build.

This is my interpretation. Could be anything, really, a good Prophecy is vague and only true in hindsight.

pretty sure that the little brother was kuvakei. that got hashed out somewhere, but i've lost the link to the thread.

I'm also fairly sure that "What was many now, becomes one when one becomes four" also happened, and was also tied to the kuvakei storyline, if my memory is any good.

Interestingly enough, you found the phrase from the trailer in the description of the Erebus Titan, and the next releases are named after Greek Titans.

That gets me thinking about Kronos and the Titans.

Erebus isn't actually a Titan - the model may be named so, but as an entity it predates Titans.

Speaking of those, and the Greek pantheon and trailers again. Let's go way back to earlier trailers, namely Revelations II:

"We are the usurpers to the heavenly thrones - we are the enemies of the gods"

The Titans were the first gods before they were overthrown by the Olympians - the pantheon we know and love. In a nutshell, the Titanomachy begins when Kronos usurps the throne from Uranos becoming an evil ruler who swallows his own children whole to prevent a prophecy from becoming true: that his children would rebel against him.

He is tricked into not-eating Zeus, who then breaks out the rest and leads a rebellion of the younger gods against the old, overthrowing them eventually.

Now, let's put our players in place:

First, from the chaos between four nations, capsuleers are born.

CONCORD is created, and slowly gains more and more power - taking the liberty to "keep capsuleers in check" to prevent them from going out of control. They will be our Kronos - they "rule" everything with those damn battleships. Keep the peace - or rather, their vision of it.

Some capsuleers escape the grasp of CONCORD into the unknown space - from W-Space to 0.0. They create their own outposts with cloning facilities and make clone vats aboard their Titans (nobody puts those on anyway, but hey - they exist!) and become separate from the empire. They cannot be controlled by CONCORD. That's our Zeus.

It's a stretch, of course - CCP did say that the expansion names are "irrelevant to the content", but the overall theme stays. We might just see the fall of CONCORD.

Nothing fits perfectly. What do capsuleers want? I see them as childish sociopaths wanting nothing but be entertained, in a sense they want nothing of material nature except for what they need to immediately blow up. We are primordial and care nothing for the empires squabbling over power. We want power not for it's sake, but because it's entertaining.

"Nothing" as Void, as more "space" to conquer.

Jovians.

Capsulers unite against empires. Fall of Concord.

"Return of the dark light from the heart of the mother"

Something with EvE gate starsystem. A disaster.

The disaster is possibly caused by a rogue group of capsuleers, for reasons currently unclear? trying to make a new connection to the old EvE gate starting system. The little Brother sorrowfully travels home, he is not not welcome, (a quote from the Chinese I ching or book of changes I believe).
This refers to a supplicant making an unwanted supplication, home, or the imperial city, on behalf of his "older brother" or Sponsor. (Normally ends in the older brothers/Sponsors execution and dismemberment)
Then.
the inhabitants, less than pleased and not convinced by the supplicant, drops a void bomb into the new passage as they did once before........

Well EvE is the mother of humanity, Possibly The EvE gate collapses into a supermassive black hole, destroying and engulfing many systems, (the Dark Light) causing rips and distortions of the Space time continuum, which are stabilised with the new Gates?

Concord splits, and the capsuleers become a single faction.

There is one EvE. Many people. Many lifestyles. WE are EvE

Some cataclysm could enable the creation of new gates more easily. Lorewise I think it always involved a ship travelling lightyears at warp speed, usually for a long time until it reached a star where it would construct the new gate.

Considering we already have implants that affect that (Ghost site Ascendancy implants) and WHs form ad-hoc connections... who knows, who knows. I think there may even be a link to SoE research here, with the Astero and Stratios names that supposedly have a meaning.

In any way, time to start the EVE's version of Doomsday Preppers. Stockpile rifters and T2 guns! when the apocalypse hits, you'll be firing space pebbles out of civilian guns, and t2 will make you king! Big smile

The line "What was four becomes one" could refer to us, because with the unified eve, we will have one account for 4 levels of consciousness (four games, three in the works/already here) So there is that

Hm, true - though it speaks of "four", and there's only three layers for now - Valkyrie, DUST/Legion (it's a PC port, let's be honest) and EVE.

We're missing one layer here. Maybe a forestry simulator?

My interpretation:

"The appetite of nothing expands over the world"
- "nothing" meaning "capsuleers with no connection to the empires"
- An important milestone in EVE, perhaps the first stargate constructed by capsuleers.

"The little brother makes the final sorrowful steps home; he is not welcome"
- Capsuleers make a jump back to Earth to find a vastly technologically superior terran race
- Represents a new area of space to explore with extremely strong NPCs with rewarding loot.
- Possible introduction of more T3 vessels, or even T4
= OR =
- Jovians make contact and are attacked by the capsuleers.

"What was many now, becomes one when one becomes four"
- The empires band together to fight the capsuleers as they build additional out-of-cluster stargates

"Return of the dark light from the heart of the mother"
- The opposite of the second one.
- If capsuleers find Earth first, this is where Jovians return.
- If Jovians made contact, this is where capsuleers find Earth.
