I'm looking for guidance on ships to help me get more isk out of exploration. I find I enjoy scanning, hacking, archeology, wormhole hopping, and such. I'm working with two toons. Both are basically maxed in scanning, hacking, and archeology, and can fly with Cloaking II. My main can do caldari ships like Drake, Tengu, Raven, and black ops. The other is more a frigate pilot but can fly transport ships like blockade runners. Here are my questions:

  1. Should I go and try Hacking, Archy in Null/low sec or stick to high sec. I'm comfortable with the danger but not great with avoiding bubbles.
  2. It won't take long to get into an Astero or Stratios. Would it be worth the cost over a Buzzard? I really don't think I could afford to maintain a Nestor with my playtime.
  3. Could either of the sister ships be fitted to do hacks/archy and be capable of combat sites and escalations? If not which of the ships (or closely related) should I bring with me after I scanned them down?
  4. How about w-space. Obviously, I'd have to watch for occupied WH's but would sisters ship be sufficient for some of the sites?

Thanks for the help! Hopefully your feedback can help me get more out of eve.

stratios can scan all, run relic/ data anywhere , can be fit to do null ghost sites and can run low sec combat sites.
Null combat sites need a HAC / T3 cruiser / Bs (Bs only in "safe null")

Money at its root is a form of rationing. When the richest 85 people have as much wealth as the poorest 3.5 billion (50% of humanity) it is clear where the source of poverty is. http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2014/jan/20/trickle-down-economics-broken-promise-richest-85

I'd probably go with a Tech 3, carry all necessary modules and subsystems, as well as a mobile depot in my alt in a cov ops hauler / use 2 Tech 3s,

travel in safety through all space thanks to cloak & nulli, scan everything down thanks to emergent locus, hack everything thanks to emergent locus, fly any combat site thanks to mobile depot, can even dualbox in 2 Tech 3s, and keep spare mods in my pimp Depot.

Tech 3 + Depot = Nomad Lifestyle

Thanks! These answer my questions. I'm not all that familiar with ghost sites but will keep those in mind too. I think getting a mobile depot is a great idea. Those didn't exist last time I played. Based on the feedback I'll do null hack/archy in either my buzzard or a brand new astero until I can get myself a stratios. From there I'll fund the blockade runner with a mobile depot to switch into combat/salvage as needed. Eventually I'll purchase a tengu... If I understand syrias correctly I'll eventual put the depot on a 2nd tengu.

Sounds like a good plan. Thanks for the help.

For Hacking/Archaelogy sites you should just stick to a Buzzard, using an Astero is a waste of money since the increased combat capabilities don't mean anything in those sites since there are no rats, and it's far more expensive to lose. As for using a Blockade Runner to hold your goods, it won't really be necessary in a Stratios, you can carry all the modules you need for both relic/data and combat sites (little to no ammo is required since it uses drones/lasers) in just your Stratios as well as a mobile depot to refit without needing a second ship. However as Syrias mentioned, you'll find null sec combat sites too much for the Stratios to handle so in the end a T3 is the best answer to this type of exploration lifestyle.

There's a safe null area of null sec??

When I was in null sec, the south west, I used a Helios fitted out for the usual exploration but with some escape features ( Warp core Stabs) as well.

A tip I picked up by a few fellow null sec residents, was to use your cloaky hauler alt as a scout, then move one system ahead as your main scanning alt is cloaked up in a safe spot.

Null sec sites give much better rewards, but they also can be used for ambushes, and this can happen in Low sec too.

I'm more cautious so I only scan a null system when it's just me, once someone jumps in, I cloak and wait or leave.

It's up to you, how and where you go, but once your out of high sec, your fair game.

Good luck.

This was what I was worried about. The stratios is much more expensive but considering it can do some of the combat it could be worth it. It seems with all the new input though I should just focus on fitting two tengus after my buzzard makes enough isk. I don't have any mastery in them yet but I can just build SP while I build replace isk in non-combat signatures.

If you have 2 chars, one can sit in a covops and do all the scanning and exploting of data and relic sites and for the other I'd suggest an Ishtar because it is amazing at projecting selectable damage types up to 100 km with sentries. If you have a maxed out Ishtar its even better than a T3, my Tengu gathers dust right now. Also, its cheaper should you lose one.

Additional info: since the introduction of Geckos the Ishtar is obscene, 2 Geckos and a heavy drone chew through battleships like they were cruisers.

Only downside is that you have to be more careful of course, no covops cloak and bubble immunity makes that a better choice for lowsec. For null, T3 with mobile depot would be best.
