Hi,

how does this bonus work?

I have three research agents (all level 4) and two give me 86 RP/day, but one gives me 328 RP/day. His agent info shows me a 3x Research Field Bonus...

It is on Starship Engineering and I outskill (I have it on 5) the agent. Is it the higher skill?

it is safe to ignore starship enginnering always gives more rp but the datacores also cost more so it works out about the same

It's just 3x's the amount of rp's/day which then you need to spend 3x's the amount on the cores you are researching.

Starship Engineering cores are 150rps and you earn 3x rps/day.
Nuclear Physics are 100 rps and you earn 2x rps/day
All others are 50/50

There is probably some historical reason for this but afaik, it essentially means nothing.

The reason for the field multiplier can be traced back to the days of the T2 BPO lottery.

Each RP was essentially one lottery ticket for all applicable blueprints for that type of research.
For instance, Mechanical Engineering RP had a chance to win in just about any ship lottery and a lot of items alongside it, whereas a [Racial] Starship Engineering RP only had a chance to win one of that specific race's ships.
If the field multiplier would have not existed, you would have been crazy to go for any racial starship engineering research if you could just go for mechanical engineering.

Right now however, the field multiplier does absolutely nothing - datacore cost is 50 * field multiplier, so it cancels out with the increased RP gain.
You're getting the same amount of datacores per day per agent, regardless of field.
Assuming same agent level and same relevant science skill level, of course.
