Jump drive discrepancy?

So, I understand in game how the jump drive and cyno combination work, but I remembered reading in the science articles it was possible to jump by jumping to a gate, and as a prototype without even using a stargate. Is there a lore reason why I'm REQUIRED to have a cyno, or is it just hand-wavium at work? Thanks in advance

For reference to what I'm talking about, section 5, paragraph 3

I think what might have happened here is a laxness of the language we employ when distinguishing between a warp, a microjump, a jump via jump drive, and a jump via gate. These all use slightly different technologies (with the exception of the microjump which is warp drive + some Handwavium :) ). I think anyway.

I would almost believe that, were that the language not so specific.

Further research into jump drives, especially those aimed at amalgamating the technology used for jump drives and the one used for jump gates, has led to more and more advanced jump drives becoming available. It is now possible to fit a ship with a jump drive capable of inter-stellar travel. The first versions of these allowed the jump drive to connect to a jump gate in another solar system and jump to it just as if the ship had moved through a jump gate.

Even if were referring to the first model jump drives which is more akin to a warp drive, it would still imply that I can at least warp to a different solar system's jump gate without accessing the required jump gate (which would take a really, really, long time and require several recharges of the capacitor). But it specifies a jump drive that combines the jump gate technology (explained in section 3) with a ship's jump drive to create the jump drive that we know of today (the one that allows one to jump to a required cyno). Question still stands: what is the lore reason for NEEDING a Cyno and not just jumping to X gate in range?
