I'm happy that there's a client at all since Mac OS is still an after-thought to most game developers. I think most Mac users understand that cider has some serious limitations, so I'm wondering if CCP will ever release a native mac client? iOS is so popular among devs lately and its not a huge jump to go from iOS to OS X so is this something that is on the drawing board?

The tl;dr is that EVE's programmers generally are not at all familiar with iOS or OS X. More significantly, their graphics programmers are only familiar with Microsoft's DirectX libraries, not the corresponding libraries that Apple's platforms use (CoreAudio, OpenGL, etc.).

A native OS X version would be a significant investment in developer training and time. The upside would be that once they had one, it would be a relatively short hop from there to both iOS and Linux.

I wouldn't hold my breath, especially not now that CCP has changed course from "EVE Everywhere" to "everything on PC."

CCP would need to at least move from DirectX to SDL for graphics.

If they *DID* do that though, the idea of native OSX/Linux/SteamBox client would be very possible (and might possibly drive support for this, if SteamBox as a platform gains significant traction).

At the very least, I wish CCP would consider looking into cross platform libraries instead of ones that tie the client into one platform (albeit the largest one available, which is why they do it, which makes sense).
