Built by who?

I've seen this idea in a few other games, and I quite like it a lot.

Why not have ships, specifically expensive or rare ones, that tells you who built it, and how long its been in the game.

i.e.

Ship: Revenant
Builder: CCP Foxfour
Life Span: 1 Year, 9 months, 20 Days

I'm not sure how CCP has things coded, or how difficult this would be, I think it would be a nifty idea. It would also show in the kill data as well.

This would also show if people in Goons were selling to NCdot or vice versa. A good way to keep people honest. No one likes it when you sell to the enemy, unless you're ripping them off :)

I'd say no trolling, but like that'll happen. :p

Would require a major redo of the database and code. Either that or they would have to come off the assembly line already assembled and could never be re-packaged or put in stacks.

i think there would be a problem with packaging and unpacking.

im no coder, but when u unpack a mod or ship, i think it destroys the packed item and creates and unpacked item. and when u package an item u destroy the unpacked item and then create a packed item. When u pack up a ship and then unpackage again, it has no memory of what it was, not even its name or what drone group it was assigned to, because in all respects, its a brand new item.

this is probably why little safe guards like not being able to repackage whilst damaged are in place. because u could pack and un pack to repair for free or rejuvenate crystals.

But what if I don't WANT people to know who built my ship? Overall nifty idea though, does have obvious issues. Maybe a simpler solution would be to give our ships a bio on the show info window? Kind of like the bio on the pilot. Wouldn' t have to be long either. It would obviously get deleted when you repackaged the ship.

daichi - that's pretty much it - a packaged item only has the basic attributes that you can look up from the show info screen from the market or similar, the unpackaged item contains info on damage, bonuses, (eg from ship hull, rigs & accessory modules), grouping, etc.

For posting an idea into F&I: come up with idea, try and think how people could abuse this, try to fix your idea - loop the process until you can't see how it could be abused, then post to the forums to let us figure out how to abuse it..... If your idea can be abused, it WILL be.

Only if I can turn it off for every single ship I ever build, buy or fly.

When ships are packaged, they lose all "individuality". That's why you can stack them. The game database can't know - won't know - anything about them, including rigs. But yes, for ships above a certain size it might be good.

But what should that size cutoff be? Freighters and Orcas? Or only larger and costlier than that?

The easiest solution to the worst of the database problems would be to limit it to Super-capitals since they cannot be repackaged, so that eliminates that headache.

Its one headache for another. DB staff are redoing the DB schema to put in this new field, setting up stored procedures and triggers and such....and it only applies to a very small handful of ships.

Classes in db can better cover schema and its implications. the short version is this is a complicated area one does not just enter into lightly. And when only maybe 1% of the DB benefits...quickly falls into the not worth the R&D time.

I was thinking specifically more towards T2, T3, and Capitals. I don't think an individual player would work, simply because they would HAVE to build it in the station. If its done through the pos, I think it would be harder to do.

Glad to actually get some real feed back from people. Usually its just straight up trolling.
