Better explosion effects needed ASAP

Re-watching the old Day of Darkness II video, I was reminded again of how much more real and powerful the old ship explosion effects looked compared to the current "bubblegum burst" animation.
We either need that animation back, or preferably an entirely new effect to replace the current poor visuals that do not live up to the rest of EVE's graphics standards.

I agree. I was thinking the same thing while missioning earlier today. The explosion effect is what I might expect from a small firecracker, not a massive ship. I'd love to see a new much-improved effect in one of the upcoming updates.

I agree. Some of the explosions are little more than a firecracker. It at least needs to be more random, where some ships just break apart, and other have a massive explosions if their magazines or fuel bay is full. Self destruct needs to be massive also, dealing damage to those in proximity.

They are pretty bad at the moment. They don't look like a huge spaceship is exploding. They look like the tiny ship seen on my screen was actually a real tiny model with a firecracker in it. Even the smallest ship in the game is the size of a large airplane with its own reactor, so a bright flash when the reactor goes boom would be nice.

Ooh, this brings up another point - should exploding ships damage other ships? I can see this being really annoying, but it adds to the immersion and simulation.

A mixture of the old white-blue flashes followed by the current gas scattering would be awesome.

no. not because its annoying, but because it can be exploited to hell and back.

Confused as to why this matter is so urgent that it requires an "ASAP".

ASAP ? lol.

Because if I wanted to play ELITE, I would play ELITE. Blink And because the Art Department has nothing to do with game mechanics, game balancing or introducing new features and mechanics in any case. So this can rightfully be an ASAP, without preventing other projects' progresses.

Attn: CCP_Seagull et al

Please halt all work on the upcoming Kronos realease and fix the explosions fortwith and without hesitation.

Your alacrity in the matter is greatly appreciated.

That is plain and obvious dear co-capsuleer: the "bubblegum burst" is ruining much of EVE's visual experience every.single.minute.of.every.day it is in the game.

Bubblegum pops are what I expect, probably because I understand what a vacuum is and I don't worship Michael Bay as the fount of all visual effects innovation.

Big explosions coming from small ships with a trifling amount of recycled atmosphere and ammunition kept inert by vacuum storage for safety purposes would break my immersion.

If it wasn't guaranteed to murder the servers and graphics cards alike, I'd ask for better debris animation. Watching random missiles sputter around in curlycues into the sunset wouldn't be so bad, but Hollywood explosions in space are just silly.

Progressive damage with more substantial hull effects (smoke, flames and sparks) would also be great. There was a neat video from one of the previous FanFests (2013?) where they had some really wicked ship explosions they were working on.

I am currently away, traveling through time and will be returning last week.

And during this fanfest I believe they talked about how it'd be next to impossible to implement those features and others like them that use proprietary physics calculation engines on a wide scale because of the hardware discrepancies between players. Perfectly understandable when they showed the slide saying that Eve players use 855 different types of graphics acceleration hardware.

I didn't even know there were 855 different types of GPU in existence until I saw that.

Big bad-a** explosions are definitely doable - it's just a question of will. As for improved hull damage, they seem to have managed ok with particle effects and smoke trails for missiles - so it wouldn't be a stretch to also incorporate variations on this. Imagine if the ships started trailing dark black smoke accompanied by red and orange sparks from random locations. Ships currently have the "fireball" effect so it shouldn't be too hard to expand upon that. As for progressive hull damage, all we're really talking about is applying damage textures to ships. It doesn't have to be as extreme as seeing bits and chunks blown off.
