Does anyone know where to see recording of ship painting tool in action?

I heard they showed it briefly at fanfest, but not sure where to look... if anyone has link and time point where it is?

www.google.com

or you can go to the ccp youtube page and look, or just watch the keynote.

Made a signature so I am taken seriously on the forums, since thats the only thing they are good for.

Sweeet! Didn't know about this, thanks for sharing.

Once upon a time the Golem had a Raven hull and it looked good. Then it transformed into a plataduck. The end.

Even if we never get this, wow.... that's a very powerful tool. I can't imagine the work that went into creating an easy to use tool like that for ship skins; It seems like they could crank out new ship skins in a matter of hours (lots of QA and reworks involved before a finished product :P) but still, amazing.

Wow, as if the character creation/customization wasn't enough of a time killer... I can only imagine the tears that will flow when a lovingly customized ship gets blown up real good. I pray those tears won't be mine...

This will likely never get released to the public for use. Realistically speaking it would only add a few kilobytes of data since all the art assets would most likely be pre-made and no custom painting to avoid **** pictures. For example (Art asset ID> Width/length : rotational angle : position X/Y (since it's effectively a 2D surface) : color (RGB) : texture scale) Let's break that down. (009872 : 3.875 / 9.284 : 78 : 994.50 / 220.98 : 54 / 95 / 175 : 4.5 : stuff). When you break that down, that's not a lot of data to do a whole hell of a lot, especially since art asset 009872 may be a like a ship camo texture and the rotation, scaling, coloring, etc are all modifications on what is already a pretty fleshed out design. By using already existing art assets with a engine powerful enough to apply such assets on the fly to ships, you don't need to add a lot of user transmitted data to implement near fully customizable ships.

What this would require to be implemented is
1: A lot of the art team's time in creating art assets like lines, icons, camo and other complex textures, flags, whatever the hell they want to be included.

2: a large portion of the User Interface team's time to figure out an interface that works best for this. The sad/ funny part? The concept has already been largely completed by fans..... ( Here )

3: A moderate portion of the programmers time to add in the extra little bit of net code to transmit custom ship paint paremters to everyone. This means everyone with a custom ship paint would have to have that information broadcasted to everyone else on the field. Hopefully we can keep this information to only a few kilobytes since if everyone had a ship paint this could get rather large.

4: Figure out a monetization scheme that encourages people to purchase them.

lol, you mean no nose art with fake naked Miley Cyrus or hakencruz (banned in at least half a dozen countries) and SS Totenkopf symbols :D

TBH as an almost full time skinner for ILR2 online for about 10 years the real issue with custom skinning is not the occasional offensive paint job that12 year old boys seem to find funny, its the overall abysmal lack of aesthetic sensibility exasperated by a complete lack of any photoshop skills that will manifest :D

That's when you need to find a balance between customization and uniform aesthetic is restricting something too out of the ordinary. Simple lines, shapes, etc can help to customize a lot without making a ship too ugly. Simple modifications can bring a lot of pleasure, just take a look at Warframe's custom paint jobs.
