I think the use of API keys is just another case of players doing the best they can to fix a problem before CCP can be bothered to get around to it.

Managing and securing a corp and its assets is difficult because the in game tools provided by CCP are not really suitable.

Hopefully future expansions will give corp management some love.. The fanfest keynote seemed to indicate that is the plan.

I had the impression the CCP attitude was "working as intended".

I accepted the contract.

I've had a similar situation before, back in my younger days i was shopping around and found about 7-8b worth of corp contracts just floating throughought various stations.

Who does that?

Why?

p. much.

I'd like it if many of the corp management functions were more logical, but I think corp assets and sov and such are pretty good where they are as far as vulnerability to a malicious individual harming you from the inside.

Letting people see my assets and wallet prevents jealousy.

The API key thing is just one of many annoyances causes by the inability to properly secure your corp. The result is the anti-social nature we see in high-sec today, where soloists run around in 1 man corps because they fear being AWOX'd in anything larger.

The reason most Soloists run around in one man corps is because they want to play on their own and have enough intelligence to discover that there is a tax rate on NPC corps (or just want their own POS and the tax break is completely accidental).

I would give out most of my API but doubt that I would give access to my Assets on my main. Their is no legitimate reason to want that info and frankly it is none of the corp's business what I have in my hangars. If they really want to try and build it up from Journal and Wallet info they are welcome to try but there will be plenty missing.

A full API lets you examine the wooden horse all over, but never reveals the soldiers waiting inside.

There's plenty of reasons to want this.

I make the same point: if you can't trust the corp's recruiter to know you have a Drake parked in Nomaa, then don't join the corp. There are very legit reasons to need to see your assets.

There definitely is.

If I say I am an indy pilot, I sure might have a retriever or two, but oh, what's that? I have a Gnosis 2 jumps from your corp's base? And my skillpoints let me use T2 medium blasters and I have Thermodynamics at 4?

Big no-no.

So yeah, it is your corp's business what you have in your hangars. It might save their lives.

You can see the skillpoints for the guns and thermodynamics without access to assets. Anyone may have a gnosis (given out free) or buy one in a matter of minutes. You're a carebear and it's quite silly that you wouldn't let someone in because of a few PVP skills.

For a corp I was in, it was a way to share assets at a pos we didn't have a corp office available. We had some corp assets that we would share, and we'd put it up as a corp contract. That way, whoever wanted to use it could pull it off corp contract, use it, then put it back up before logging off.

But, it was a very small corp of guys that knew each other real life.....and it wasn't 8 B.

This isn't an either/or choice. The tiger might get you regardless, but you can at least not spend the time leading up to that getting picked at constantly by the thousands of mice (and letting the mice at you isn't going to keep the tiger away).
