While it would technically work. A PCI card is the worst thing you can put into your computer as far as performance goes.

A ATI 4850 will not power 3 displays on its own, but a 5000/6000 series card will (Nvidia will not. They all are limited to only 2 displays per card so no surround or anything until you go SLI).

You could pick up say a 6970/6950 and like said above, get a active displayport to DVI connector (unless you have a DP capable monitor) and you would be golden with 3 displays and easily enough power to power them all.

I also reccomend a 2G version of those cards to help allow you to run the textures and such at max across 3 screens. It may not need it at 1080P, but it may use it for 3 displays.

And considering my experiences with 4800 series cards, the 6950/70 will be faster, and cooler without using more power.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Order=BESTMATCH&N=100006662&isNodeId=1&Description=active+displayport <-- Displayport to DVI adaptor. It must be an active one to work correctly and also will allow you to use Eyefinity if you decide to span the Resolution 3 wide ;)

Also make sure if you havent already, to follow the steps to have 2 seperate eve client's with 1 eve install. It works great and allows your client to remember what monitor had which fullscreen window for each account. You will launch the game with 3 separate shortcuts. Easy. http://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/Multiple_clients

I want to run 3 clients in windowed mode over an extended desktop on 3 monitors so 1 different client is on each monitor (2x dvi monitors 1x hdtv)

From what I can find from google this may be possible with 1 ati card running all 3, the 2 monitors, then the hdtv via a display port to hdmi adaptor?.

Im abit confused tbh so if anyone is running 3 clients on 3 monitors and could post thier setup id be most greatfull.

Just to add, im already running 3 clients over 2 monitors with no problems, its just adding the 3rd display im confused at.

Thanks

I run 6 clients on 4 monitors. It is possible. Windowed mode is your friend.

I run multiple clients over 2 monitors, my problem is moving to 3 monitors, the number of clients isn't an issue.

The 6850/70 reccomendation is just a high end ballpark incase you want to play eve maxed out on 3 monitors, I believe it could do it well. If you are on a budget, any 5000/6000 series card with 2dvi+DP or 1dvi/1hdmi/1dp can do 3 monitors, but you wouldn't want to go much lower than a 5770 id say.

Ah I missed that bit 1st time round, now all I need is a good cheap active display port convertor, altho none seem that cheap but If thats what I need then Smile

Set to Fixed Window mode, once in theres a drop down menu that allows you to pic a monitor for you're window. May work but I promise nothing.

I've been doing this for aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaages now.
Can confirm it works with 2 monitors using DVI -> DVI, and HDMI -> DVI.

Getting my third next week, and switching all to display port...will let you know how that goes :)

I've got one 6870 driving thee displays my setup is 2 display port monitors and an HDMI->HDTV. You're limited to ether 2 DVI outputs or 1 HDMI and 1 DVI output anything more then that and you will need an active Display-port to HDMI or DVI adapter if none of your monitors support Display-port. The adapter you would likely need is a Single Link Active Adapter they're like $30ish on Amazon you don't need the far more expensive dual-link adapter unless one of the monitors resolution is above 1920x1200.

Setting fixed window is annoying to setup in my opinion but a must have. I first set windowed mode re-size it so it's 1920x1027 if i have the task bar up or 1920x1076 if I have the take bar auto hide

A 6870 will run 3 1080p monitors maxed out with AA disabled and get a solid 60fps in each client in dock and undocked. I don't remember what the fps was in combat but it was better then 30fps I think. If you use the captains quarters you will only get 30fps with two clients running maxed out with no AA never had three up and running in CQ mode to see how well that would work

I've been doing this for a few years now.

3 x 22" Monitors, 2 ATI video cards (all HDMI)
I actually installed 3 seperate instances of Eve in CCP1, CCP2, CCP3 directories and have assigned them to monitors 1, 2 & 3 in kind.

Works great

Edit: Windowed mode obviously ...
