Oculus VR CEO sees potential for an MMO with "a billion people" in virtual reality

"Do you want to build a platform that has a billion users on it, or only 10, 20, or 50 million?"
Oculus VR CEO Brendan Iribe

So,... the first milestone is 10,000,000 users?

Must be nice to having a CEO grounded in reality. It is nice, but not every company is that lucky.

Yeah... this is pretty much a completely bogus claim. They call about everything an mmo these days. By the time the server tech and internet backbone is capable of such a thing, for a true mmo, OR will be long outdated and replaced by some other technology and/or company leading the way. Decades out. This is just marketing bs, far from technically achievable anytime soon.

Eve Online is proof that the better an MMO is, the fewer players it has.

So an MMO with a billion players is going to be something bad. Free-to-play, easy, friendly and super accessible (that's the hottest word in the gaming industry btw). That's just something we're not ready for. You buy furniture for your virtual house with virtual currency that you buy with real currency while inviting your friends over and... I'd rather just shoot people in space.

Yeah, retina projection and nerve stimulation. Even then, currently just a log-in server couldn't handle such a load let alone the network layer of the typical mmo game server code. And the more players you add to an area, the greater the server and bandwidth usage goes up - 'exponentially'. Then you get stuck with limitations to the code vs. performance. So technically, most server code can handle say 64k players (UDP/IP), but at a cost of being very... sloshy. Like, you would see other players running backwards in game, running in circles, flying through the air etc. So then you need to divide server worlds, just to handle the code vs. language limitations vs. the server hardware vs. network infrastructure. So theoretically there could be a game with 1B players, but it would be spread out to different servers, even different regional locations most likely, all rather independent. If there were even 1B people interested in such a thing...

Id say, currently the only real solution to a large scale mmo (or mmo like) would be through altered reality play. Such as like with Ingress. That's a recent Google game, and they will most likely integrate it into some version of Google Glass most likely. More practical application under the current limitations.

You just need to buy separate rudder pedals for it though.

There is already a MMO with over 7 billion people with an even more realistic world than Occulus Rift will ever deliver.

All you need to do is to close FB and go out and talk with people.
