Encounters scale based on fleet?

I started playing with a friend of mine, and after we both finished out separate military career agent missions we flew to a nearby system and accepted a level 1 security mission.

We fleet up and fly to the encounter and when we arrive, the guys just don't stop coming and many of them have missiles. He was able to warp to safety but I got demolished.

If you are in a fleet are missions suddenly a lot more challenging?

Missions aren't affected by the person running them or any friends he might have, although missions under the same pool (Ex. lv1 missions) can vary quite extremely. Probably just happened to get one of the harder missions in the pool.

Also, certain rats trigger additional spawns, if you shoot the wrong rats first, you can see quite a cascading effect.

oh ok, thanks for responding.

Why do level 1 missions vary so dramatically? Is there a way I can tell what i'm getting my little frigate into? haha

Use the link above. It's excellent, although not always 100% accurate. It will give you enough information to keep you alive.

Make sure you have your ship fitted properly. If your fitting is bad, even amazing skills won't save you.

Here's what I was flying when I got #wrekt

[Atron]

[High Slots]
Light Ion Blaster I, Antimatter Charge S
Light Ion Blaster I, Antimatter Charge S

[Med Slots]
Stasis Webifier I

[Low Slots]
Small Armor Repairer I
Overdrive Injector System I
Overdrive Injector System I

[Rigs]

I think my blasters had some different named prefix on them but you get the idea. Also, i know that the overdrive injectors give diminishing returns but I don't care about cargo on this ship and isn't it better than putting nothing there? I've also been training skills relevant to the above. Feel free to tell me i'm doing something wrong here though. Cool

Small armor repairer is a good start, consider filling your other mid slots with 'cap rechargers,' They will help you run your capacitor for longer. If you are going to use blasters I would recommend you also fit a 1mn afterburner.

For your lows, I would replace the injectors with a 'Damage Control' to make your tank beefier and consier adding in either a 'tracking enhancer,' a 'magnetic field stabilizer,' or another tank mod like 'energized adaptive nano membrance.'

For missions, railguns can help your performance, a group of 150s or greater will do less damage, but allow you to avoid being right next to ships to hit. Keep an eye on 'optimal' range and try using differenet ammo types like 'Antimatter,' or 'Thorium'

Good luck!

I'd also suggest training up for a cruiser of your respective race as well as the medium weapon systems they have bonuses for. It would tale a few days to get baseline skills to do so, but cruisers give you a LOT more health to play with so you can figure out what works best for you.

CCP ignore me please, I make too much sense.

Cruisers are also prohibitively expensive starting out when sinking a couple mil into a ship hull is a big deal.

If you fit up a destroyer you shouldn't have any problems on L1s. You get a free one from the Security career chain.

Once you get up to L3s and L4s you should be checking eve-survival so you know what you're up against. Otherwise you can pull an unyieldy number of spawns/aggro. A general rule of thumb (not always true) is that the highest bounties in a group trigger spawns.

Not all missions of a given level are created equal.

Don't know about level 1, but by far the hardest level 2 mission of them all is Mission of Mercy.

Where most level 2 missions are mostly frigates with maybe a single cruiser thrown in, and they are often separate groups, Mission of Mercy has 6 cruisers and 6 elite frigates in a single group. All other level 2 missions can be done in a destroyer (well, I did this one in a destroyer too, but that was temporary insanity, so use a cruiser).

In other missions, beware of activating triggers if you are not prepared for additional spawn.

Then there are Missions like Recon 1 and 2. If you try and kill everything, you'll probably die. But it's actually designed so you just blip through the mission, ignoring all the ships (Recon...)

Thanks for your helpful replies everyone.

I'll definitely be bookmarking the link that SurrenderMonkey posted.

By the way, if any new (or even veteran) pilots would like to do some missions in Essence drop me a message in-game :)

This is the most likely reason you got whelped, as your fit was acceptable for L1s (although the advice you've been given would make it better).

Read the mission objectives carefully. Killing everything isn't always the objective and isn't always even remotely sensible.
