How bad is the updating ability of Eve if you have to download the whole game again if you have been away for 2 weeks
i realize that there is a patch or a fix ... EVERY ... night, but not everyone in this big wide world has a wonderful internet connection and not everyone gets to play every night.
Its bloody annoying that when i do get to play i have to waste a minimum 1/2 an hour every time just to download the fixes and then get booted off and hour later so that more fixes can be implemented during shutdown.
WHY DOES THERE HAVE TO BE A SHUTDOWN AND PATCH EVERY NIGHT

There was no patch every night as far as I remember, there was like one patch in last week or so. You definitely do not have to download whole client again, if you have problems with patch, use "repair.exe" in EVE folder.

As of shutdown - you want this game to run smoothly on an optimised and maintained database, won't you?

Patches are relatively rare. The daily dt is because the whole eve universe is one server and allows the devs to optimize the world every day. Usually the dt is only for 15 minutes or so, just long enough to do a bio and grab a snack.

The timing can be inconvenient depending on where you live. When I'm in Guam it happens in the middle of my playtime.

I got back yesterday from a 2 week break.

Opened the launcher on my gaming rig and laptop and let them update.

Gaming rig took about 5 minutes.

Laptop on wireless took about 10.

Horrible it was I had to open some Rum to help me cope..........

I have deliberately developed an air of cynicism that I originally intended to make me appear somewhat louche and caddish but actually comes across as irritable hostility combined with the unspoken threat of sudden violence.....

I had to patch the other night, opened the launcher and saw the patch start downloading. So I went and made a cheese sandwich.

I realise this wasn't the main thrust of your post, but is there an argument for introducing a random element to downtime? For example, a 23 or 25-hour cycle so that a player can experience the advantages and disadvantages of local TZ relative to EVE TZ on rotation?

Devs do it at 11 AM GMT because it's convenient for them.

DT is ~15 minutes these days ... HTFU. It used to be an hour ... or maybe an hour and a half because a hamster died.

One of the bitter points of a good bittervet is the realisation that all those SP don't really do much, and that the newbie is having much more fun with what little he has. - Tippia

Not everyone can have a fast internet connection, especially in the US where internet prices are through the roof. Having lived on a 1mbit connection for several years I can understand OP. It would be helpful if there was an auto-update utility which could download patches while you were away.
