I used to play a character that played around with Planetary Interaction and was skilling for industry as well but I was never able to make any serious money out of it,as I found that in order to do so I needed to hit low-sec systems and such systems were hazardous, and difficult to get in and out with the goods, when I needed to collect the finished product. Is it possible to make money from Planetary Interaction in high-sec systems, as I'm returning to the game after a 2-year break and things have probably changed a lot since I left?

Direct answer, yes it's possible.. bt you have to be very prepared.. know what to make, when.. in hs, you don't make so much money whit one char..
I'm doing PI in LS, and i don't have any probleme to do so.. but you have to choice a very good place..

Another great place for PI for solo player is wormhole space.

WH PI is great income, but not really a solo activity. Don't forget that you actually need to live in the wormhole, store materials in a POS, keep that POS fueled (which means importing ice or blocks) and defended, and have the ability to scan for exits when it's time to take your stuff to a market, either with a second scanning ship or an alt or a buddy.

You can't exactly be a daytripper when it comes to wormhole PI, since that wormhole exit could be on the other end of the galaxy tomorrow.

That would be the 8 guys in t3 cruisers I ran into today. It may appear to be empty, but it fills up fast. I'm not up to scanning down Wormholes,it it takes too much time for my liking.

I've just come back from a 2 year break. I don't have the cash for that right now,and I was thinking that this could help me achieve the isk I need to invest into Blockade runners at some point, but right now, I'm strapped just making ends meet.

So stay in HS. Things can be better now with POCO's in HS as tax rates can be lower than they used to be under interbus. Granted in HS your best bet is a factory planet but good isk can be made

Find a high sec corp to help line your wallet while you train the necessary skills. setup and do high sec PI to help with that even at lower profit margins.

Once skilled enough move your new T2 industrial into low sec and setup your better PI chain.(Be smart have someone in your new high sec corp scout for you.)

I have done a ton of PI in low sec using high sec based alts including for a while a Pi network foolishly located in faction warfare space. I never lost a PI ship. One char uses a cloaky hauler and the others use an epithal with cloak, MWD (for gates ecape) agility rigs (fast align) and warp core stabs. Rest of fitting is tank to survive as big an alpha as you can.
Use dotlan to find low sec near you with low traffic and low ship kill counts.

Money at its root is a form of rationing. When the richest 85 people have as much wealth as the poorest 3.5 billion (50% of humanity) it is clear where the source of poverty is. http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2014/jan/20/trickle-down-economics-broken-promise-richest-85

I've been running PI in lowsec for a few weeks and haven't once run into trouble. You can fit (maybe with PG skills) a 10MN MWD and Improved Cloaking Device on the Epithal, so that enables the mwd+cloak trick and it will be virtually impossible to catch you at gates.

The only way you'll get popped is if a player is very quick to spot you while you interact with the POCO. Just be quick about it is all, manage the exports before you get there so you can just drag into your inventory.

Same here.
I doing PI in a calm LS place without much problem even if I progress with caution for each step.

Above that it's more fun because even if it's sometime empty it can be full of surprises.

This is how I do Planetary Interaction Production

2 planets (Barren and Lava) to pump out 4 raw materials. Nobel Metals, Heavy Metals, Non-CS Crystals and Base Metals
2 Planets (can be any type) to process the raw materials into Refined Commodities.
Then 1 planet to produce Consumer Electronics and Mechanical Parts that is then used to produce Robotics.

Here is a screen shot.

The Refined Commodities get put into the storage facility and the Consumer Electronics and Mechanical Parts output is stored there also.

Then the Robotics is stored in the launch pad so when you are importing more stuff you can export your final items at the same time.

I have less time than most in eve for active play so I set my planets up to produce maximum P2's in situ, then ship these to a manufacturing planet than can produce the final P3's/P4's. Probably less effcient in raw goods extracted terms but more time efficient as it greatly simplifies the whole process for me.

Interesting you should say this. I just came back from 1 1/2 year break on my main to find I have 23k of robotic from when I was playing with PI. It was a pain I remember but looks like it might still be worth while me resetting it up

Don't go through your planets sequentially either, if someone spots you going from planet 1, to planet 2, to planet 3, they will hope you have a stop to make at planet 4.

Reality has an almost infinite capacity to resist oversimplification.
