That is sort of the point. The initial change was to simplify the interface. We don't want to clutter our interface with every conceivable search term in an assortment of tick boxes and drop down menus. When most people don't understand half of the options. Yet we want to allow power users to have access to those options. I agree that more can be done to present players with what options are available and we have plans to improve that.

That looks quite confusing, I might help power users, but only if they know of it existence. How will players find the keywords for this search when your devblog has disappeared?

A more advance menu with a thickbox for these options would be a much better way and clearer way to enhance the search experience.

As you can see from Frellicus' replies in this thread then the plan is to continue iterating on this.

I love this, thank you!

And yes, please extend this to the corp assets. And make containers searchable, too. *happy* :-)

Thank you! :-)

This is super nice, however plz remember some of us have a serious memory leak regarding codes, so getting an advanced menu dropdown would indeed be epic.

This is the first time in a long while that I read a DEV blog that I disliked.
I dislike it for the following reasons:

  1. Where is the option to search inside / outside cans?

  2. What about items inside POS hangars? can we search them?

  3. I read the entire article, and all I could think while reading was: How did they dock those Erebus inside stations?
  4. Picking the Erebus as the example is the absolutely worst possible choice...

  5. Absolutely no user friendlyness.
  6. Inventing a strange syntax for searching reminds me of how the old internet search engines used to work before 1995.
You might argue that EVE is not supposed to be "User friendly" but why not?
    Read http://blog.caspio.com/web-database/7-tips-for-creating-user-friendly-search-forms/
You could place a dropdown icon next to the search textbox, that would open a window with actual labelled text fields
where the user could enter each search term. This is much more user friendly than having us learn strange keywords

  7. I do agree that some of the search screens have become somewhat difficult to use because of all the search options
  8. (At times it's even difficult to find contracts assigned directly to yourself)
But this "solution" to the problem is even worse

Very nice. Can we search inside containers?

‘No, this isn't it at all. Make it more... psssshhhh’.

Quick question since I can't log in and check since I'm at work...

I remember a long time back trying to search for one of my ships by what I named it and it didn't seem to work. Was a feature like that ever added? I still have trouble remembering the type names, especially if it's been a while since I've logged on due to RL, but I always remember what I named it. It would be nice to say, "hmm... where did I have Bebop docked?" and just search for "Bebop" in the search field.

If it'll do it now then awesome! If not, then it would be awesome! lol :)

Sadly that is not included right now but it is on my list of improvements for next iteration.

Cool. :) I think it would really help new players too. It was one of the first things I tried.

While the ability to search for metalevels and metatypes is going to be pretty awesome I have a request for additional day to day functionality...

Give us the ability to search for Ore rather than specific ores (of if that's already possible then someone tell me how Roll).

I buy a reasonable quantity of ore, of various types and with multiple jump ranges on the orders and it sucks when it comes to collecting it all up to have to search for Plagioclase, Veld...etc, turning up mining crystals and so forth in the process...

One search which showed everything from Aristite to Arkonor would be awesome...

Sounds like Category:Asteroid would hit the spot.

As for the cargo and containers that has to do with nested database queries (read: lots of DB load) but why it differs from the 3rd party API is something I'll look into. Won't make any promises about that though.

You think bringing back a gadzillion irrelevant results, leading the user to do several more queries in search of what he's looking for doesn't cause DB load?

I would expect search improvements, done well, to actually help the DB load in real life. A little more work per query, but overall, factoring in user behavior, less load.

To go the other way enterily could we get ability to search by typeID and itemID?

This is an excellent chage, but could you add another UI element next to the search button that when clicked/rolled over will display all of the switches that can be used in the search. I don't think I will be able to remember them all off the top of my head, although in fairness the majority of them are pretty straight forward.

Ta lar.

This!

Add a button that will launch the IGB to the URL of the EVELOPEDIA page, or, a quick reference page in EVELOPEDIA. That way it'd be always at our finger tips, and if changes happen, you don't have to document the change in-game, just on a web page.
