Not quite right. Railguns project damage at intermediate ranges better than autocannons, in exchang for much lower tracking.

Generally speaking, there is no single weapon system, ship, or race that's entirely better than all the rest. All combat in eve is circumstantial, and victory shines on those who know the strengths and weaknesses of their gear, as well as those of his opponent, and makes the best use of this understanding.

That being said, Gallente ships generally dish out the most raw damage in the game, and arguably the highest tank/dps combination. Applying that damage, however, is the tricky part, and as such starting off specialized in Gallente ships and tactics (which is what I've done myself) is probably the most difficult or at least complex route. To use blasters, you have to be able to stay right on your opponent. To use Railguns, you have to keep your target from orbiting you too quickly in order to hit them. And drones take longer to deploy, have to be able to keep up with the target, and can be targeted and destroyed separately. Personally, I really love the outrageous damage output of blaster combat, from the Enyo to the Proteus.

My wallet is going to feel lighter.

I tried to buy one of the old Megathron models they had a few years ago, but the day I went to buy one, it had just been removed from the store.

I'll have to get one of the new ones. Wife already hates my 7' Master Chief statue in my office. She can't hate the Megathron though. It's impossible to hate the Megathron. In fact, it's so beautiful she will probably want to put it downstairs for all of our guests to swoon over. Maybe I should get 2...

- I'd hardly call any of these established empires "good guys", all are responsible for one genocide or another save for perhaps the minmatar, but out of pure incompetence rather than some enlightened ideology.

anyway I run gallente ships because NOT tanking in your mids and having mids to use is REEEEEALLY nice, and in the case of the domi and Ishtar your highs can have all kinds of unpleasant things as your damage is capless and needs not ammo or high slots.

First off - I started as a Gallente pilot due to the aesthetics of the race

Depending on your mentality this can be more important than you think. I have grown to love my horde of little greenish flying friends (including the potato) and really struggle when forced to fly anything else. Silly perhaps, but the wonders of aesthetics are often lost in the harsh reality of EVE. And yeah... now Gallente are more competitive.

I do agree with you in that they all have their pitfalls, but please refer to my previous post about liking their use of a Democratic system, therefore being percieved as "Good" in relation to the alternatives. It's a moot point anyway because everyone has their own opinion about what constitutes being "Good." I was merely providing some explanation about why I made the decision, not to raise points of contention for debate.

I appreciate the answers but this thread is no longer on topic and my questions have been answered.

I thank those of you who have intelligently expressesed your opinions and have provided explanations.

The Gallente enjoy the good things in life.

So they want battle to be over quickly, so there ships are do or die.
So they either get podded or win.

Either way the fight will be over quickly and they will be back drinking spiced wine and sharing the company of exotic dancers Smile

Gallente have the best kick-ass destroyers in the game (the Algos, which can do about 400 dps, most of which can be applied at any range due to drones ).

Who are the 'good guys' in Eve is purely a matter of opinion. To the Caldari, the Gallente are degenerates and planet thieves.

From a functional standpoint- the Gallente ships are the FOTM for good reason. The buff to drones and hybrids in recent memory have seen Gallente replace Caldari as the de facto 'PvE-race' in Eve. Used to be missiles with single damage types, coupled with massive shield regen/buffers (Drakes basically) that dominated PvE. But drones became so powerful that they replaced missiles as the premier weapon for people to shoot red crosses in space.
Drones became so powerful that nerfs had to be enacted to make any other type of ship relevant again. In PvE the AI was coded to attack drones, and in PvP the drone assist mechanic had to be nerfed because basically one player was needed to actually be at the computer (the drone bunny) while everyone else just launched/assigned drones and went to dinner.

Gallente offer a lot of 'bang for the buck' in training. Pretty much anything bigger than a destroyer has drones, so even if they are not your main weapon platform, you will end up training for them anyway. As mentioned, Hybrids are now excellent weapons with a strong array of ammo types for any engagement range, and reload in half the time of projectiles and missiles.Training Hybrids also opens up Caldari ships to the Gallente pilot.
Armor doctrines are popular as sig tanking is as viable as fat buffers. The Gal logistics ship doesn't require a cap chain (one less skill to train and easier to get into any given fleet). The Gal ships do well either as shield-tanked or armor, where the other races tend to have less flexibility in their tank.

All in all, Gallente are certainly the race of choice for CCP. But, remember that this stuff changes all the time. For so long Caldari was considered the best for PvE but terrible for PvP. Now Gallente is awesome at both. Not too long ago it was 'Winmatar' that couldn't be beat.

From the RP perspective I can only give you a little hint:

There is no good guys in Eve. If you read the books and stuff you will soon realize, that Gallente have some of the greatest douches within their ranks :P

Gallente has the best ship in the vast majority of ship classes for PvP. In addition, the Ishtar, Megathron, and Moros are so good that they perform every relevant role for that ship class better than any other ship of that class in the game, to a degree that there's pretty much never any reason to fly any other ship of that class. Amarr has a few best-in-class standouts like the Guardian and Archon, but they have nowhere near the superiority that those three Gallente ships do over their classes. Minmatar is down to pretty much just the Sabre as best-in-class.

Also, even when a non-Gallente ship is generally seen as better, Gallente still tends to be the most popular. The Aeon is better than the Nyx, but there's still probably more Nyx than all other supercarriers combined.

Gallente are in a pretty damn good place right now.

For frigs:

Comet, Enyo, Ranis, Malus, Keres, Dare Devil- All are really strong / Good ships

Cruisers:

Rail Thorax, Shield Blaster Vexor, Navy Vexor, Rail Diemos / Dual Rep Blaster diemos, Ishtar (is seriously OP right now) Celestis,

BS:

Machariel, Domi, Navy Domi, Megathron, Navy Mega, Vindicator, Rattlesnake

Caps:

Moros / Erebus

Right now gallente are in a really strong place. Drones have received some massive love, and currently Sentry shield Ishtars are probably the best ships in game currently. Gallente have some very strong ships through out their ship line currently. So there are many reasons to fly gallente. They have excellent kiting ships in the Dare Devil, Rail Rax / Rail Diemos / Ishtar. And still have some nice brawing potential with the Diemos / Vexor / Vexor Navy / RR Ishtar.

With the latest heavy drones out (Gecko) Some of the DPS numbers you can put up with the gallente line are simply jaw dropping. Training gallente is a good pick.

Judging from fanfest, its a good time to be gallente.
