Well for a start you can kiss goodbye to privacy.

Stepping out of a shower, standing naked before the mirror as you examine that odd rash? Well now it won't just be you examining it - it'll be hundreds, thousands of your networked colleagues, ah.

Those things you used to look at on the Galnet when nobody else was looking? Well thousands of sets of eyes will be sharing those little personal perversions with you now.

That lady you take out for a date at a nice station restaurant? Not only will all your colleagues now be privy to the discrete dinner-table conversation but they'll also have front-row seats to whatever happens when you both get home.

And Bob forbid you ever have any doubts about your path, or your loyalty to Nation, as before you can even process such thoughts I'm sure Sansha's brute squad will be kicking your quarter's door in and giving you a good dose of motivation to stay.

Networking, sir. It makes me sick to my little tummy.

I have only just recently been made aware of it's full implications and the wide spread use of the technology involved. If I was you Mr Sparrowhawk I'd take a similar philosophy as my family and I have which is never to associate with such perverse technology or those who use it.

You assume privacy is a good thing. But remember, if you have done nothing bad, there is no need to be worried. Why would you mind sharing your experience with all of the things mentioned above? Shared happiness is best happiness. Shared sorrow is easiest sorrow. Shared knowledge is true power.

Your attitude is admirable ma'am.

I take it in that case you'll have no objection to me having audio and video holo-transmitters setup in your quarters, bathroom, bedroom, corporate meeting area, vessels and even on your person to provide an unlimited, twenty four hour stream to my neocom?

Your attitude is not correct though. The idea is shared, not given. But you are welcomed to join unity :)

Of course it's shared, you're sharing it with me.

Nowhere in your justification was the requirement for the sharing to be mutual. You advertised the joy of sharing your own happiness and sorrow, in the context of an individual, so let's have it.

Oh, gosh, it's not all that bad to be under observation, really. Maybe some embarrassing moments, but that's about all! A dose of good humour is enough to settle those problems!

Why should I share with you if you don't want to share with me? I don't trust you enough. But I trust everyone in my nation. Why, because we are all brothers and sisters and we know what we think.

.....

You know I really begin to wonder what kind of mundane lives some of you must live if you cannot see the differences between being "observed" and being "invaded", nor empathize with the basic human requirement of privacy.

Then again I guess it just reinforces why I find so many of you odd to begin with, so I'm not really all that surprised.

Because mutual sharing and trust had nothing to do with your original statement about why sharing everything is so wonderful.

You claimed that sharing your happiness or sorrow with many others is a good thing. Yet as our discussion evolves numerous conditions and limits surrounding this "sharing" are beginning to show.

Why does the sharing need to be mutual and why is trust important if privacy has zero relevance for you, huh?

You know, I haven't had my morning workout yet today. If you'd like some help rowing your little boat backwards then I'd be happy to help.

You didn't talk at all about being invaded, miss, nor was it implied - at least not to me. You were speaking about the willful surrender of privacy, and how you didn't like the idea! That's a fair enough position to take, but it's certainly not "invasion". Nor does it say anything about my ability to empathize. To be frank, I'm generally told that I empathize with others too much!

Privacy isn't a requirement for healthy living, but is a component of our modern psychological landscape. There's nothing wrong with exploring the social space available to our species in search of something different - that's how societies evolve.

Who am I even talking too here?

You or one of the thousands of people who shower with you by proxy?

This whole networking thing is confusing, scary and sickening.

It is an invasion ma'am. Not of the networked parties involved I guess, but moreso of everyone they interact with. Especially when they keep their implants 'secret'. Talk to one and thousands are privy. Hence why I want nothing to do with such people.

These people want to share everything with one another in their circle then fine, I guess.

Just stay the **** away from me.

I'm not networked in that manner at all, miss. I'm generally under observation because, if I lapse into a coma, the medical team would like to know about it. The data is also used for calibration of our product line. I don't have anything against people who want to live in that arrangement, mind you! But my comments were on privacy, not networking. I think we've just had a misconstruction, that's all!

Perhaps you're right.

I'm sure we can find a way to straighten out this misconstruction.
